I am sure your comments were for all the right reasons and well intended thanks for your support .

I totaly agree with most of what you said --ref--keeping little clubs going--we will keep trying --

With ref, to holding opens ----my opinion of that is -----sadly it was all the opens held that killed off the little clubs

There used to be at least 10 whippet racing clubs in our area all about half hours drive from us now --

We would get up early Sunday morning go to Kirby-Stephen to race --have dinner in working mens club then on to afternoon racing at Penrith --great days !!!!

The nearest now and only other in the north west region is Astley n Tilsley which is about an hour away ---

Gone are Carlisle/Penrith/Kirkby-Stephen/Sedburgh/Kendal/three in the Barrow in Furness region/Preston/Oswaldtwistle/--

in the late sixties /early seventies it was not uncommon to see three grades of racing with 100 dogs running at a club handicap twice a week at Lancaster-- it was much harder to find a dog to win at opens --only the best from each club would travel to opens----the rest run at local clubs===

Keeping them going ---no longer sadly and may be to late to save for future generations--some areas will survive but not all --

thanks again for your support

Steve

Have to agree with the opens killing off the clubs, but even the attendance at them is going down, you only need to look at the last 2 golden jacket opens, hardly anyone there. Everyone can see what is happening but we just keep getting more and more opens, something really needs to change.

i think all clubs struggle this time of year. we only had 3 turn up 4 the handicap last sun @ the rising sun and i think she only had 3 or 4 @ westerhope. all u can do is turn up each week and hope people turn up thats wot we do. also wot i do i write a little newslleter with when the handicaps will b on when they r cancelled etc.

God I remember those days so well, we used to race at all those clubs over 30 years ago. It's a long time since we had whippets our last one died about 10-11 years ago.Where is Far Moor in Lancaster cos although we have lurchers now one of them loves to race so we may have a trip down memory lane 1 night and bring her along.Sonia

Hi you would be made most welcome at L W R C--we used to run along Quay Meadow behind Waggon and Horses pub --but sadly with all the new buildings and bonfires broken glass etc we deciced to move to far moor playing fields ---situated along side the old moor hospital and young offenders prison --I hope to see you soon.

There are a few faces from the past poping up for a look and all are welcome --Lancaster, LA1 3JW

I have to admit Steve there are weeks when I wonder if it is worth carrying on with our club (Manton) although at the beginning of the year we were getting good numbers over the past few weeks numbers have been very low, last couple of meetings we have hardly had enough dogs to race so have just trialled and puppy trained with the help of the people who have turned up. Maybe the hard ground, injuries, seasons all have a bearing on this but i strongly believe that with the amount of opens, BWRA events and Fed events that the clubs may be suffering. I too remember racing in the morning nipping home having a quick bite to eat and then on to round two for afternoon racing. We would race morning at Manton then on to Ollerton & Bevercotes, when Ollerton closed we raced am at Manton and pm at Retford, sadly Manton is the only one of these clubs remaining, although we are very lucky in the E Mids as quite a few clubs still going (obviously alot more been and gone as is the same everywhere!!) We should all remember clubs are fab for training and schooling our up and coming open class dogs, but if they all go by the wayside due to lack of support eventually our sport/hobby will do too!! (Sorry off the soap box now (w00t) )

Good Luck with your club hope it picks up :luck:
