I nearly lost Bradley the other day, I had just got him out of the car and noticed that his lead and been unclipped from his collar. No one had got to him as I was with him the whole time. He just ran off and wouldn't come back. Luckily a friend managed to catch him for me. It is not the first time that I have known this to happen as I know others that it has happened to. No idea what happened or how it was unclipped as I know it was on right. The only thing that I can think of is that his ID disc caught the "lever" on the clip and opened it.

we have had that happen a few times with the greyhounds usualy if there haveing a good shake so i tend to use the buckel type leads now that fasten like a belt at the bottom mutch safer i got my last 2 of vicky and there not too heavy for whippets but have been strong enghe to hold my big 30" (at the shoulder) greyhound back when hes seen a rabbit

Funny because the same thing happened to us the other day with the lead unclipping we were baffled at the time, of course Oh said I must not of put it on but the other 2 still had theirs on and I know i did

Yup, me too. It hasn't happened for a while now, but I went through a little phase of having it happen. I knew I'd clipped it on properly and started to think I was going mad. So did some car drivers at the traffic lights when I suddenly noticed that Josie was trotting across the road in front of me and I was dragging an empty lead

The looks I got for doing a full-on rugby tackle on a defenceless whippet

The idea about the id tags catching is an interesting theory  I hadn't thought of that!

My mum has got one of those leads but 5 clip ones as well. Will have to look into getting a couple of the buckle ones.

Strangley enough OH had Oscar out the other night and this also happened to him - hence I went bolistic when he came came ....... the dog arrived at the door himself (w00t) (w00t) we do live in the country but the main road is quite busy.

We couldnt understand how it had happened - but Oh said he had shaken in the rain before it happened.

It happened to me the other day too! I was walking in the middle of the road when I realised the lead was slack! (w00t) Alfie skipped off to the pavement (he is obsessed with walking ON the pavement not the road   ). Anyway I had to call him twice but he skipped back to me and I clipped him on again :sweating:

Alfie doesn't have an ID tag on his collar so I think I blow your theory?! :b

Yes it has happened to me too. I think they do sometimes catch on the identity disc ring, but also if the lead clip gets into an awkward position it can catch on the D ring that it is attached to. (Well that's my theory!!)

I think I might invest in leads with buckles. I was looking to buy Dolly a new posh collar after seeing the pics of all the lucky whippies with gorgeous collars from Sprout.  Can't make up my mind what colour to go for. :- " :- "

Had this happen to us a few times too untill I decided to buy buckle on leads. Much safer. :D

If I might add my twopence worth....

The trouble with the buckle leads is that they take a lot longer to do up and undo (if you want to let the dogs off quickly in a field for instance) - also, in the winter, when hands are cold, they are fiddly to do, and take a lot longer to actually put 'on' again.

I have had clips get stuck occasionally, and every so often I spray WD40 to make sure the clip works quickly and smoothly. I think the spring can get infiltrated with grit/sand, but a quick squirt of WD40 has worked miracles with mine.

It does pay to check that they are in the correct position during a walk though - they can indeed get caught up with either the ID disc or the actual ring to which they are attached!! -

We had this happen when our first Whip was a pup. We now have two clips on every lead so if one unclips you've got a back up, its not failed yet.

I also had this problem once,i found that their jacket was catching on the lead clip& causing it to come open

After wondering what to do about it,i bought 2 very strong key ring holders & just clipped them onto the collar.Problem solved, there's nothing for the lead clip to catch on

So you clip the lead clip to the key ring holder? Sounds like a good idea.

It works really well  .As my dogs coats have a gap in the bit at the base of the neck,i just pull the rings through that & then the lead clip won't get caught & possibly come off, which has happened in the past .I also found that sometimes the very end bit of the collar would catch on the lead clip & could cause it to come off! (w00t)

You need to get the really strong rings,& i got 2 just to be on the safe side.My lot don't usually pull, but if they see a cat or rabbit, they're total nutters
