Hi, i'm new to this site & a first time whippet owner. I have a 4 1/2 month old whip called called Merlin that I need some advice about.

Its to do with letting him off the lead - I know that I have to be very careful & i've been told he should be on a familiar walk but I don't know what sort of age I should be letting him off or just how far away from roads I have to be, there are country parks around my area but I don't live in the country so it's impossible to let him off in the middle of nowhere.

He is great at recall but so far have only had the opportunity to try this at home or on the lead (dragging me or my husband behind him). He is itching to run and strains at the lead but i'm worried about him getting lost or injuring himself.

ive got kiplin and he is almost 15 weeks old now,ive been letting him off the lead since he was 12 weeks old.

as soon as you let him off he should be a tad worried because the last thing he wants is to lose you,he will be fine honestly,as the time goes on and he grows more confident then he may allow a little more distance between you in which case if you feel the distance is growing too much shout him to get his attention and even get hiddy behind a tree or whatevers about and keep calling him so he can follow your voice.

treats are a good thing to keep at hand so they know they get a reward for coming back when called.

but please dont worry too much as he will be more afraid than you the first time.

and i should have said welcome to k9 hope you enjoy the site,and could we possibly have some pics of merlin :wub:

yep i would agree, i have bean who is 11 months and gets worried if she cant see me and is fantasic at recall.

Just hide a few times, not for long but just so they look round for you....

Check this thread, we discussed this at length only short while ago;
off the leash

:thumbsup: I was going to add that there a lots of threads that new whippet owners will find useful in our FAQ section :thumbsup: Perhaps have a browse when you've got time? :)

Thanks for your replies everyone. You've convinced me and i'm going to brave it tonight. I was warned by several people about how never to trust a whippet off the lead so it's made me overly cautious. Having trouble with downloading photo's on my pc at the moment but will post a pic of Merlin once it's sorted out. Cheers again.
