Looking For A Rescue Dog Buddy For Harry

BEING FOSTERED IN SOUTHAMPTON
13-06-08 Fizz is stunning whippet cross. She is 14 months old, good with dogs but will chew indoors. She had a home but came back as the adoptor did not want to crate train her and found her too lively. She is a sweet and very attractive dog.
18-06-08 FOSTER UPDATE
Well, we made it home to Southampton on Saturday with 4 dogs and 2 humans in the car. No escapees and no fights but Fizz hogged the whole back seat so I, and our own 2 dogs, spent 3 hours scrunched up in 1 corner! She settled down immediately with us and showed herself to be a very chilled, jolly dog.
When she met the cats her instinct was, of course, to chase since she’s a lurcher but she has since been duffed up by one of them (aka Slasher) a couple of times and is a lot more wary but has still has to be watched. She is good with my dog, now 19, and hasn’t yet knocked him over, even during her loony, turbo moments in the garden but I can see her being too fast and too rough for some dogs. She is good with food ie not competitive and has not taken his leftovers or been protective of hers.
Bedtime seems to be a problem as, despite being given a gorgeous futon (!) she wants to sleep on my bed. Luckily I have no partner to complain but she is very forceful about it and takes up huge amounts of room. This is going to require a lot of training I think.
As she’s still a youngster, Fizz jumps up a lot. She does get down when told but as she’s getting more relaxed here she is also mouthing and nipping. Again, more training but as she’s tall this could be a problem with smaller children.
All in all, Fizz is great fun and I am in love with her already. She is very playful when she is in the mood but when she’s quiet she is very soppy and cuddly. It’s a lovely combination.
26-06-08 FOSTER UPDATE
Fizz has settled in really well here. She feels like part of the family. She is still very bouncy and jumps up which can be a problem for my daughter (who's only 10 and therefore short) but we are dealing with it. She is getting better at sleeping on her own bed - doesn't get up on mine till at least halfway through the night!!
I can now let her off the lead having worked out the best place for her to be walked. In busy parks she was distracted by activity miles away, such as children or other dogs and ran way out of range very quickly. I took her to a quiet park but where we live it is fairly rural so again she spotted a rabbit in a field at the other end of the park and went. I had to follow her through the fence and the undergrowth to get her back! We now stick to the open forest where she can run as well as a favourite patch of open land where she can chase rabbits. She can now be recalled from a distance, walks to heel off lead and is fairly obedient as long as not distracted. Because of her speed and her lurcher instincts you would have to be keep quite tight control and stay vigilant.
She is obviously trained and knows loads of commands. It has just taken a while to figure them out! She is good with livestock and shows no interest. She has calmed down a lot with regular exercise but needs at least 2 short walks a day plus lots of play. She loves children and enjoys lots of cuddles when she is quiet but, when she's resting, needs to be left in peace.
We all think she's gorgeous and a real character for the right home.
