just had an email from one of my puppys i bred can any one offer me some advice to give to them.

mr whippy wiil be 2 in July

I'm emailing you because we are having a few problems with Whippy and I wondered if you could offer any advice. He has become quite agressive towards men visiting the house - he has actually nipped a couple! In addition, he has now starting snapping at me, my husband and our son. We are obviously really worried about this as we tend to have a lot of little children visiting us. We haven't had him castrated because his balls haven't dropped so it would be quite a major operation (and cost about £400). Do you think having him castrated would help or do you think it is too late?

I'd welcome any advice as I think if this continues we might have to rehome him.

sorry no advice here, but i hope they get him sorted, esp with kiddies in the house :luck:

Without having too much information, it does sound as though Mr Whippy has assumed the role of pack leader in his household and is defining his authority (w00t)

I think they should get some professional assistance to point them in the right direction and get some training done. Then, if things don't improve, I should think neutering would be the next step forward.

I hope they don't have to rehome the little lad ...... best of luck helping them :luck: :luck: and keep us updated

This is a serious problem and they should really contact their vet to be referred to an experienced animal behaviourist as soon as possible. I do hope they are able to get this sorted before anyone gets seriously hurt. :luck:

If his testicles are undescended they could be giving him pain. They're better out than in anyway, as they can turn cancerous :(

I have a dog (3 years old) who is also snappy towards anyone who comes in the house. Has nipped quite a few, including the behaviourist! He also has no visible nuts and is going in for his op in may. I don't think the two things are related though. I would recommend that your friend gets him checked out by a vet to rule out any other causes of pain which may be making him more aggressive.

My dog wasn't socialised up until we got him so his behaviour is difficult to handle anyway, he's a lot better now though after we have had lots of professional advice.

Look up Jim Greenwood (he has a website), he showed us how to handle Lenny in the house when we have visitors. He also helped with Lennys dog aggression too. He's very good, specialising in lurchers and sighthounds in general. Don't know where your friend lives but he does travel around and is very reasonable with price too :)

Just one thing to tell your friend, if s/he is now getting nervous about having people round then the dog will be picking up on that and will probably get worse. I used to get extremely nervous (understandably because its not nice when your dog goes for your mates!), one day we got a suprise visit after I had had the best part of a bottle of wine in front of the tv and Lenny wasn't bad at all, only a few barks but no lunging and snapping! That really brought it home that it was my confidence levels which were making him worse.

Hope it all works out for Whippy

The first thing for them to do is to pop along to the vets incase there is a physical cause for this. The dog can then get treated for any medical problems or refered on to a good behaviourist.

I've heard lots of good reports from owners about Jim Greenwood.

I can't offer any advice re the aggression but just thought it's worth mentioning to the owners that you can claim for undescended testicles on pet insurance as this is a medical condition. I had the same problem with Merlin - the op wasn't that major for him, he was right as rain the next day. It cost under £200 (and I go to quite a pricey vet) but apart from the excess I was able to claim it all back.

I would say to check the small print of your policy, I have noticed quite a few companies are now saying that they will not pay out for this condition. Luckily I still have my old policy and the company have said they may or may not pay, they will assess the case when it comes in
