Hey all!

So basically I am looking to give a home to an Italian Greyhound. I have two whippets (both rescued) and would love an Italian Greyhound. I usually rehome dogs rather than buy puppies so would prefer to do this (though would consider a pup) I also have a cat so preferably an IG who is used to cats or who you would be confident enough could be trained (I have always had lurchers, whippets etc and have de sensitised every one of them to my cat)

I am in Scotland but willing to travel a reasonable distance.

I promise a 7* country home

Hi I have an Italian Greyhound - she is 7mths old and like you I started off by wanting to rescue. I'm the other side of the country though - South East of England - but it seems no easier around here. There is a charity that specialises in re homing Italian Greyhounds but they do say there is about twice as many applicants for the amount of IGs they get in.

I also love sighthounds, wanted (and still would like one day) to rescue a greyhound but cannot currently commit to a large breed of dog, hence the IG came up as an idea sometime ago.

I ended buying from a puppy and it took almost 2yrs. We researched a bit first and then searched and searched again.

We are VERY happy with our choice, she is the only dog in the household (besides a bunny) and she fits in with our lifestyle perfect (we travel a lot so she travels with us).I can imagine that any breeder would be more than happy to reohome one with you.

I actually know of someone (but it's all the way down Essex) who is now looking for a home for one my puppy's siblings. But yes, that's rather a long way for you

Just wanted to ask - how do you 'de-sensitise' your dogs to your cat??? Our puppy is too keen on my bunny. She probably wouldn't harm her but wants to chase and play, which my bunny girl doesn't really care for

Thanks for the reply! Regarding the cat it was really just time. I literally would bring the cat into the house with the dog on the lead and let her sniff etc but still have her under my control. I think it helps that my cat has always lived with dogs (lurchers, whippets etc) so isn't scared, won't run off and therefore is not a chasing lure! Anytime the dog tried to be too boisterous with the cat I said no and made her sit until she calmed. After that it started to happen naturally and now the cat has been known to share dinner with the dogs! Perseverance is key!

No! I am sure I came across a litter of pups online at some point but I wasn't looking for a puppy, I prefer to rehome. Seems easier to get a pup than an older dog.

Cash-Dolly, yes I for one am glad that their are a number of breeds that seldom turn up in rescue, IG's I expect will be one, obviously their will be the odd one due to circumstance changes ie marriage break up or owners dying but their wont be many.

Suggestion:
a breeder who is retiring a former show-dog, M of F, or who wants a pet-home for an ex-dam or -stud, might be thrilled to have someone who has sighthound experience.


pet-limit laws in the U-S hamper many in the dog-fancy, & breeders or show-owners find loving homes for their former breeding stock & finished Champs [or the dogs who didn't grow out to fulfill their puppy promise], so that they can bring on the next possible breed-champion or potential dam / sire.
An otherwise-perfect dog with an underbite isn't a show candidate nor a possible sire / dam, but is a wonderful pet.
