I have a friend here in Canada looking for a certain line of whippets and wanted to know if the kennel/breeders were still around. She would also settle for lines with strong ties to either kennel. If anyone has any info on these lines plaese let me know. The kennel names are:

Hilgarth or Stoney Meadows

Thanks,

FoxyDog

Was not Stoney Meadows a US kennel? Sorry I cannot be of more help, but I believe it was American.

Stoney Meadows was a US kennel which was active from the 50's through approximately the mid-1980's, with the last litter carrying that prefix born in 1992 (I'm virtually certain about this).

They were located in Maryland.

Although there are no living SM dogs to my knowledge, there are of course Stoney Meadows lines which can be found way back in the pedigrees of many American show kennels. In fact, it would be shocking to find a pedigree that didn't trace back to at least one SM dog somewhere among all the top show lines.

But they are so far back that genetically, I don't think you can call anything today SM lines. Subsequent breeders have mixed them and put their own stamp on them.

Mrs. Wear was a beloved figure and very revered, who died just a few years ago, but her declining health made it difficult for her to continue as a breeder for the last ten years of her life.

Hillgarth is definitely a British kennel.

Shamasan Whippets probably has the most SM close up of any kennel I can think of off the top of my head. Here's a pedigree of one of her dogs:

Ch. Appraxin Mysterious ways

I know that the Hillgarth affix is owned by the Whippet Breed Council

Greetings from Canada where we breed English bloodlines, but not the lines you mention as they are frankly ancient, and so far back in anyone's pedigree as to be impossible to recreate now as any examples of either of those kennels now would be 40 or 50 years old. Hillgarth whippets were late 40s, 50s and early 60s (the last pedigree I have of a Hillgarth dog is one born in 1961). It was an English kennel with dogs imported to America by people like Peggy Newcombe, who brought in Hillgarth Shot Silk, amongst other dogs.

Stoney Meadows was American, not English, and owned and operated by Mrs. Doris Wear who bred in the 50s, 60s and 70s. After that she devoted herself to judging and disbanded her kennel and her breeding program. I met Mrs. Wear on several occasions when she was very elderly. She died with Alzheimers, a few years ago.

I've only just noticed this post

Can anyone tell me why is this affix owned by the Whippet Breed Council?

Breed council buys any affix's belonging to infulencial kennel that are no longer with us.

To stop anyone in future years using that affix, or kennel name as it is now
