i'd got dij off lead (with muzzle - those reading his thread will know why) in my park. It's a private park, fenced in all sides.......so once in there, there really isn't anywhere a dog can go to.

So, i was helping Dij understand that when we're out he needs to keep an eye on me at all times - otherwise known as 'hide and seek'!

if he chooses the left hand path, i go right..........if he runs too far ahead to see me - i run off and hide! He's getting the message quickly.

Anyway, he'd run round a bend in front of me to the meadow (only about 20 yards) when i caught up with him there was a 'shuffly' looking man with a chain lead in his hand, walking towards dij.

When he saw me, he put the lead back in his pocket furtively and turned away. He's not someone i've seen before and i know most of the folks who use the park regularly.

I've been mulling this over since, trying to think if he could've had and 'good' intentions towards my dog.

but

if he thought Dij was on his own, why wouldn't he wait more than 20 seconds for a person to appear?

why would he go all furtive when i appeared?

why had he got a dog lead in his pocket and no dog?

You see - i'm trying very hard to tell myself that Dij didn't have a narrow escape from a dog-napper ............. but my logic and reasoning just won't let me.

What do folks think?

oooooo sounds dodgy to me, sounds like you were both lucky today. How scary for you.

Was he maybe looking for his own dog - just a thought here.

but you were right to be wary.

Sounds very odd to me too, if he was looking for his own dog wouldn't he say maybe  I would  or just say thought it was my dog when I saw yours ect, if your walks are at set times maybe go at a different time or different place,do you have a camera phone I would take it along next time if so just incase this fella is lurking about and also it's a good idea to have a phone with you anyway

I hope it was just an innocent episode but I'd be careful anyway :huggles:

Being a complete drama queen, I would imagine the worst.............That would really freek me out completely. Keep an eye out for him and see if he actually has a dog

It's very small park - would be hard to lose a dog in it completely!

Usually the whole park knows if someone's dog has b*****ed off as you can't actually be too far away to hear them shouting!

i have in the past clipped random dogs onto my lead when i've hard people shouting....and shouted back to them! but even if it was a shy person who wouldn't shout - if i saw them coming towards me i'd say something like 'i thought this one was lost so i caught him'

it was the stuffing the lead back into his pocket and turning away witout a word that unnerved me!

(but i might be being a bit of a drama queen too!)

worth reporting it to the police....just so their aware.

He may well be a dog napper

Lucky escape

Sounds very dodgy to me, I think you are right to be alarmed. I'd consider reporting it to the police also.

Gives me the shivers just thinking about it :(

Sounds very suspious to me do you have a parkie at the park or a community police man you could report it to?

I think you were right to be worried

have reported it now to the park ranger.....funny isn't it how even the most obvious things don't occur to you sometimes :b

Horrid to be bad-minded but I think you could be right. I'd report it, and give a description to someone if you can; if there are more incidents it might help identify him.

Someone got hold of our telephone no once and made threats to 'hand the dog over or I'll take him'; fortunately he couldn't find our address from the number so, although it was unpleasant having threatening calls made (sometimes in the middle of the night), I didn't think the risk was that great. Then, on another sighthound site about 2 months later, I saw a lurcher bitch had been stolen about 30 miles away; The people had advertised their litter and someone had come to see her puppies; he used exactly the same form of words "hand the bitch over or I'll just take her" and must have watched the house until they went out before breaking in to do just that, leaving the puppies behind. The bloke also had an Irish accent too, and the incident had happened about a week after our own.

We'd kept the mobile number (after doing a 1471) when we were having a problem, but OH had thrown it away later. I was so sorry we hadn't kept it or reported it; it might have helped the people with the lurcher get her back. It made me realise how often sighthounds are stolen too. :(

Sorry - didn't see you'd already posted urchin

Sounds very odd to me. How did the man get into the garden? Glad you've reported it to someone. Take care both.

Sounds strange to me too, be on your gaurd infuture and tell all your freinds who use the park too. Glad it turned out ok though  :luck:

Have you seen any more of him?? or heard anything after you reported this .... just curious really.

Nope Janimal - not seen him since, but am telling all the dog walkers to be on their guard - particularly those with free running dogs.

the trouble is Jean, people who are not park members often hang around at the gates, and some people let them in! they're not meant to (and i never do!) but some people are less diligent/more of a pushover?

then there are some who climb the gates (although that tends to be the 'yoot' rather than middle aged men.

sounds very dodgy hun i think you have had a lucky escape, i would deff phone the police and report this just in case.
