I've seen quite a few posts on here about lurchers competing at the long jump & think my little bitch Scrumpy may be quite good at it. We do agility with her & people have commented on what a big leap she has. The jumps she does are 2ft high but she clears them by at least a foot & usually takes off & lands about 4ft in front & beyond. She is 2 and a half & is 21"

My question is how would I train her up for long jumping? What height & spacings are the hurdles? What are they made from & how are they put together?

Any info on training or entering competitions would be helpful.

Thanks.

Julie

hy julie

the jump itself usually consists of rows of conduit pipes spaced out every foot. 2 lengths of pipe at each side with notches cut at every foot to rest the pipes on, that way they bounce off if they get hit. the lure runs on a loop system along the ground below the jump and round a spool and back to the start again. the dogs are given a few yards to approach the jump and a run-off at the other end.

most dogs learn it straight away. start off with a simple leap then add the conduit on each time. its really safe if you do this way.

Thanks John, so it's off to B&Q then for lots of piping. I didn't realise there was a lure under the jumps. I just thought I'd dangle something interesting at the far side of the jump, like a hairy pipecleaner maybe :- "

Cheers,

Julie.

Thanks for that, it's shown me how the jump is set up. Now to start training her :))

julie just remember to have the pipes sitting loosely across the 2 rows of guttering so they bounce off clear if they get hit
