Hello all,

I'm new to this forum and i'm looking for a lurcher pup. I thought where better to start my search than on here with like minded people.

I dont really want to have to travel for hundreds of miles, so im looking for a breeder within the north west of england, wester the better :p

I am looking for a pup with potential working skill which can fit into family life good too.

Not sure what type of lurcher to go for, I suppose its whatever breeding takes my fancy and is practical to get to. I like the looks of Whippet/Beds, Greyhound/Wolfhound and also collie/greyhound, any variation on this with alternative terriers or something would also be good.

Although I have friends who are sighthound enthusiasts, I dont really get contact with many lurcher and terrier men (or woman lol), So just wondering how much people think I should expect to pay for a decent dog pup?

I hear quite a bit about such and such lurchers, and then other people say they are no good, its a bit of a minefield with people with different views for a beginner.

So any relevant advice is also welcome :D

Thank you all for your time, hope to hear some good feedback.

Hi TopHoundDog,

Would you consider a rescue? There are lots of lurchers in need of a good home including puppies of various ages on this site and www.lurcher.org + www.dogpages.org (altho don't mention working to dogpages as they tend to be of the don't hurt the fluffy wuffy bunny brigade). Rescues will do a homecheck and like 6' secure fencing round garden & aren't keen on proximity to main roads unless you have an airlock to prevent accidents but it's well worth it as so many get pts every day.

As regards breeding I have a whippet x beddie+grey+collie who I adore and a collie x lurcher pup I bought (failed homechecks due to roundabout outside door) who is a real star and is already protective of me at 13 weeks! I did set out to adopt a golden saluki x but fell in love! If you primarily want lurcher as pet then I think you will just fall in love with one and that will be that! I don't work mine altho Lupin is rather fond of chasing squirrels & rabbits but hasn't caught one yet.

A lot of rescues will home anywhere in country and lurcher.org will often arrange transportation of hound by volunteers to you. Most of these hounds will have been fostered in someone's home so they will be able to tell you quite a bit about them and whether you will suit each other.

Best of luck and look forward to seeing pics of your new friend!

If I can be of any assistance let me know.

Louise

If you would consider a rescue I really recommend Sheya Greyhound and Lurcher Rescue in Manchester. Julie morgan is fantastic and will really make an effort to find one to suit you (07941026456).

If you want a puppy try looking in countryman's weekly. You'll find they cost between £100-£250 depending on what you want.

First thing to consider when wanting a lurcher is what are you wanting to do with it.

The type and size comes from that point. Or at least I think that I should. :)

If you are intending to work it then you need to look at the environment in which it's going to be expected to work. No point having a big dog trying to turn fast in small fields. No point having a small dog when you want something that can run for long distances.

Yeah I understand what you mean, I will probably try a little bit of work, but first and foremost he will be a pet.

How big is your sofa? That should help decide large or small! :)
