@Biker John .... tell you what,some people who have never seen a whippet run get the shock of their life when they see how fast they are. I love their explosive starts. Blink and they are gone.

Jasper can - or rather could, he can't be bothered nowadays - beat a whippet in a straight line. But he could never catch one as they can turn on a sixpence in an instant, whereas he has the turning circle of the Ark Royal.

@Biker John why not get a whippet x deerhound x saluki lurcher? Then it would be perfect! (According to your definition of perfect.... ) Deerhound crosses don't seem to age anything like as early as deerhounds - something that would put me off owning one too.

Ooh, good question - it's been a while since we've encountered a rabbit, hare or deer and when he has, I've not been thinking about his cornering speed! But I've a feeling that it does improve when he's chasing prey - if he's running with another dog, or even chasing a squirrel (he regards them as 'just for fun'), the point of the game is simply the running whereas when he's after a prey animal it's all about the catching and he is much more focused.

At racing we let any breed have a run, obviously between races, and every now and again someone sees us setting up and come on with a dog. Often they say things like he is really fast, then the races start and we then normally hear 'but not that fast'.
JudyN being a bit pedantic but a Whippet x Deerhound x Saluki would not be a lurcher it would be a Longdog. Though I do admit I have always had a soft spot for a rough haired Lurcher.

Yes, this is true. Though their characteristics are all typical of the same spectrum so I tend to stick them all in the same bucket.

Frinsky, we get the odd one watching but not many, apart from when we run an open when their is quite a lot of cars / vans on the field and people tend to notice somethings happening and come to watch, and everyone is impressed both by the dogs running and their general quite nature when not.

Being honest, I didn't even know there was such a thing as 'terrier racing'. I shall have to do some investigation to it and see if there is any such a things happening around here. It does sound rather fun! Thanks for idea.

Either that or mine will go and check out every single corner and never get to the finish.
Anyhow...I'm already excited! I've been 'googling' and found a fun terrier race going on close to where we live. Didn't know about this dog weekend event, so even more reason to check it out.
If my girls are fit to go I WILL enter them for some wild running. Oh, it will so much fun, I'm already laughing the though what these pair might get up to.
Older one is quite mean runner already, very keen to chase a tennis ball and even when still pup, she could not help but try to keep up with group of collies when they were playing ball. Bless...she did put her best foot forward. But now, with her longer legs there is no stopping her
Little one...well, she ain't gonna stretch her legs much more than they are now. They aren't quite stubby but she ain't leggy neither. She is getting faster but she will still have to grow up a little . But we have got now 6 months time to train and get my girls to top condition..
