Over the last day Frankie has 'cocked' his leg and weed once at my mums house and twice in ours. He did the one at my mums in front of us!

He has never done this before, infact i have never seen him cock his leg. The wee's weren't big, just small. He has always been fantastic as far as house training goes.

Over the last day i have also seem him 'humping' Chloe and also Holly's head. Again i haven't seen him do this before.

Apart from this he is his normal self. He is 9 months old nearly. He has only just come out of kennels so i don't know whether this has anything to do with it.

Is this just typical adolescent behaviour? Any advice / experience would be greatly appreciated.

My friend Patience in the States makes belly bands for boys here http://www.dogwalkers.net/other_stuff.html

They work in training as they won't like the feeling of being wet, and will keep your stuff dry if they do try to mark.

As I don't have boys I don't have any other advice for you, but hope someone comes along soon with some help. In the meantime it might be worth a look at these.

Yep, this sounds familiar!

Dij went through a phase shortly after we got him of doing this (around 10 months) Caught in the act, he got shouted at - not over the top prolonged ranting, but a very loud very firm 'no'

if i'd not copped him doing it - then clean up in secret, making as little fuss as possible but using something that will remove the smell like biological wash powder.

and until last week i'd not had a repeat of the behaviour. We'd gone to a friends house who has a 5month pup and the 2 boys had been playing together. however after a couple of hours Dij's patience seemed to be wearing thin - particularly when stan tried to take a pigs ear off him. Dij was good and just gave a warning growl but it was shortly after this that he cocked his leg up the pouffe....I read this as a direct message to stan-puppy 'actually mate, I'm the big doggy here'

Luckily i know the expression he gets just as he's thinking of doing it, so can intervein quickly!

But this is definately dominance behaviour, something Dij is asserting quite a lot at the minute - so I've been reading the Jan Fennell Dog Listener book, and am going to try her method of re-ordering the pack hierarchy! It is quite intense so i'm looking for a good month to schedule as 'Digit Demotion' month. I'll let you know how it works in practise, but the theory seems sound....Digit think's he's the Alpha (coz that's what I've unwittingly told him) so things like marking territory and seeing off threats are his responsibility. if i userp his position, it won't be his job any more and he should look to me to deal with these aspects of life.

Maybe it's worth getting hold of a copy????

good luck :luck:

I like the Jan Fennell book and think her advice is sound. However my criticism would be the use of treats. This does not work with my boys although immediate praise does.

White vinegar and water 50% of each will remove the smell. I think if you catch him a firm URRRRRRRRGH, should hopefully work. Lily says to tell Frankie that he can't mount HER head or she'll rip his off! (w00t)

Edited to say that it is possible that it is a result of being in kennels that he needs to reassert that this is his territory. Also with the loss of Mollie the pack order at your mums has changed. Hopefully he'll get the message that its not acceptable. :luck:

Thanks for the tips so far  I think he is deciding that he is the pack leader. Juley, it was a good point about the loss of Molly at my mums. At home i think Chloe will be at the bottom of the pack (despite being the biggest and here first). Frankie will be top for now but i think Holly will be in charge when she's older as she's a bossy little miss

At ringcraft last night he told off a Great Dane (good idea Frankie!) when i was fussing it and talking to it's mum. It was as if he was saying that i was his mum and he didn't want me giving attention to anyone else. He also wasn't too keen on the other dogs sniffing Holly. I suppose he is feeling territorial over me and the house as he's been in kennels and been away from us.

Buffee `tries ` to be top dog here too :- " must be in the breeding ;)

I'm not sure it's just boys either when Kane first came if he had an accident in the house Sienna would go and pee there( I only know because I once caught her doing it) she's top dog here and never wees in the house and hasn't done since now he doesnt.

 I only have the two males... but now and then Oscar tries to hump Kobi too. (w00t) and gets a telling off. Kobi just stands there and lets him too.

Oscar is usually the one that pees in strange places too - like when we visit my sister in law (with Boo the Siberian husky) he pees up the umbrella stand in the hall, and then also once over her ornamental white cat sat by the hearth. (w00t)

:D Welcome to the world of owning a male :huggles:

Wait till you have a bitch on her way into season, then the fun will start (w00t)

But don't forget Frankie is a teenager  and a gorgeous one at that

Both my boys do it, Merlin more so than Toby  , when we go out anywhere, I have to watch them all the time - at racing Toby tried to wee on Therpans Dad :b , and Merlin wees on everything, at shows he tries to wee on every trade stand and tent pole/peg, sorry no advice though as I havent craked it yet either ( not convinced I will (w00t) )

I'll put a peg on it, that should do the trick

When we left Marble at his Nanny's last time (who has two Greyhound bitches) he decided to pee on their beds which I put down to dominance behaviour.

We are going away again today so we are hoping this behaviour doesn't start again as he has always been a good boy to date. :D

As for clearing up and completely getting rid of the smell so they don't return to the spot again we found that Soda Crystals work wonders & it costs pennies.

You can also buy it in a solution now which is excellent.

Anyway fingers crossed it's something that they will both grow out of. Our Harry (12 years) hasn't done anything like this & we rescued him when he was 3.

Good Luck :luck:

Hope you both do well at the show on Monday we will be thinking of you! :luck: :luck: :luck:
