Please can anyone give me some advice. My Bitch has been bleeding for 2 weeks tomorrow and I am planning a litter from her. I thought they could conceive 10/11/13 day after coming into season or do you have to wait until the bleeding stops? I am planning on taking her to the Stud so need to know. Many thanks.

Ask the stud dog owner, if the dog is used regularly they should know.

he doesn't know either!

Has the dog not been used then? Another question, have you got homes lined up for your puppies? Bearing in mind cash for some people is in short supply. Not getting at you, just wondering.

The only way to go is take the bitch over on the 12 th day and see how she behaves, if she goes for the dog, wait 24 hrs and try again.

If you waited until the bleeding stopped completely, the season would be over! After 10 days or so the blood becomes lighter in colour and thinner in consistancy - this is often a sign. The bitch herself may seem very willing to 'stand' - although one of my bitches would have happily thrown herself at any dog and the other couldn't have been any less interested in the mating process if they tried. Also, after mating they both carried on with their season as normal, stopping bleeding completely on around 21st day. I know many bitches stop their season sooner after a successful mating, my mother-in-law said she always had this with Labs / Springers.

I had one of my bitches ovulation tested to determine the best time for mating, although i didn't bother with this for first litter. Opinions on the value of this vary but i certainly would do it if i was planning on driving hundreds of miles to the stud.

Please don't think im being rude, but this sort of thing is covered in basic breeding books - which i would think would be essential reading for anyone planning a litter. It's also a bit worrying that the stud dog owner doesn't know this basic sort of information.

Hi

Have you tried usng ovulation strips, these pin point the actual ovulation day, just used them on a bitch of mine who missed on her last mating, I was ready to take her on the usual times, but according to the strips she was ovulating on day 8, and is now hopefully in whelp( or rather fat )

The Stud has been used before but with a previous owner!

Yes, I have homes lined up for all the pups plus I will be keeping one and the owner of the Sire will be having one!

I have read numerous books on the subject over the years but when it actually comes down to it it isn't always textbook stuff!

Please do not turn this into something it is not.

My thanks to the advice off the people who are giving just that - advice.

I think between 10 and 14 days is the norm but Spry was day 17 and caught first time

One of my bitches would stand at 10 days but her daughter went to day 16 before she would stand. We only had 1 mating with her but she took first time.

If your bitch started her season 2 weeks tomorrow then you probably have missed the boat.

I have always taken my bitch on the 12th day.

Some say it's better to be late then early, which means get to the dog today without delay.

I'm also a firm believer in fate, which means if you have missed the boat, it's for a reason.

I agree in part Kirs, regarding it isn't always texbook stuff but it helps, pre, planning a litter, when the bitch is most likely to be receptive & sighns what to look for, breeding, pregnancy and in whelp, I know from personal experiance and it saved me alot of heart ache and the loss of a much valued family pet.

Good constuctive advice mate, no malice or criticism intended

:luck: Good luck with your future litter.

Twiggy accepted the dog on day 15 and 16 of her season so finger's crossed!

I once had a litter from mating on the 20th and the 21st day, SEVEN pups!!! It was the bitch's 3rd litter, the previous litters were conceived on about the 12th and 14th day. This time the dog was not interested, although the bitch was standing from the 10th day, and continued to stand right until she was mated :)

Fingers crossed for you Kirs and things go well with Twiggy :luck: Now get them texbooks out

( I might be Barking up the wrong tree)Sorry can't help myself :lol:I dont wish to be forward that is not my intention, you might have volumes of experience but a even vet refers back to their old texbooks, Honest you will find alot of invaluable information that will be of help and give you peice of mind throught Twiggys time. ;) :luck:

No experience at all. I have "The book of the Bitch" and that sounds helpful. I'm sure she'll be a fine mother! Twiggy's legs look like Twiglets, you know the marmite covered things!lol

The book,, sounds like a Joan Collins novel

Get yourself off to the library should find yourself what your looking for also keep incontact with your vet :luck:

Regards Mitch

The Book of the bitch is fantastic, I would also recommend the Whelping and rearing of puppies.

I am going to read my copy again ahead of our new arrivals, as I hope to be present at the birth this time. :D

Hi there.

Good Luck with your future litter. :luck:

I would reccommend The Whippet by Phil Moran-Healy - it will be very helpful to have a book from people who have had years and years of experience in the breed, there are chapters on planning and rearing a litter. I would also reccommend Patsy Gilmours, Whippets Today. They are both very good books.

You may already have books but those 2 i would highly reccommend.

Marie :huggles:

Good news she is lined :) ,,the girls who have came to Robbie have been from day 11- 17,,,I thought the day 17 girl had missed as it was so late and she was very tight  ,,but my wee man never gave up and myself and the bitch's owner never gave up,,we got 3 pups from that litter,,one now a champion,,and 2 open class,,so a great litter and my Gizmo is one of them,,not all girls are ready at 11 weeks.

All girls are different,,,whippets to Great Danes,,,its a girl thing lol
