I was walking Merlin & Willow last night when Merlin ripped his leg open really badly. I have no idea how it happened, one minute he was fine and the next he looked like his leg was hanging off.

He could barely walk at first and we were half an hour from the car, he is too heavy for me to carry as I am a bit of a weed, luckily he began to walk a bit so the poor boy had to hobble back to the car.

We took him straight to the emergency vets but because he had eaten a couple of hours earlier they couldn't put him under anasthetic so they cleaned and dressed it, gave him a couple of jabs & we took him home. My husband took him back in this morning as I had to be in work at 8am. His paw had doubled in size this morning and he couldn't walk on the leg at all.

The vet said it's happened in the worse possible area (on the bend above his front paw), apparently it may be difficult to heal but she will do her best to close it.

Anyone else's whip had an injury in this area?

sorry no advise ,just hoping merlin makes a speedy recovery sending him lots of :huggles: :huggles: and :luck: :luck:

I often read about how well whippet injuries heal up. I hope this is the case for Merlin. Good luck Merlin :luck:

Ohh poor Merlin, hope it heals soon and he is back running with Willow. Lots of luck :luck:

oh dear sorry to hear about Merlins injury. :(

My Archie has had two injuries this year...the first one on the top of his front leg right where the leg bends.

He had staples put in for 2 weeks and the injury has now healed without hardly a trace. It meant keeping him on the leader till it had time to heal....but Im sure if your vet does a good job...he will soon be back to his old self in no time at all...

Thanks for your well wishes.

We picked the wounded soldier up late yesterday afternoon, he was out of it all evening. His leg is done up like a boxing glove and he is yet to master walking on 3 legs. He just wants someone in the room all the time and wimpers when he gets left alone. I slept in the lounge with him last night but i've had to leave him alone today for a few hours as I have to work this morning.

The vet said the x-ray's were ok but because of where the wound is we have to be really careful about the sutures ruptering so no walks - not even lead walks until the stitches are out (if all goes well in 10 days), we even have to take him on a lead to the toilet - how frustrating for an energetic whippet used to at least 2 hours of walking and frisbee a day. He's going back tomorrow for a check up. So far it's cost us £550 - thank god we're insured.

Ouch....the leg and the bill! Glad he's been fixed up though. All the best for his recovery. :huggles:

Poor little chap :(

I'm glad he's on the mend :) It made me smile when you said you slept downstairs with him. I did the same when Ella punctured a vein on barbed wire. She had her leg bound all the way from top to toe to prevent swelling (which hampers the healing process) and she was soon walking by swinging the leg outwards as she moved (w00t) They're so clever at adapting

I expect Merlin will be up and about in no time and you'll be wondering how to keep him still

:luck: :luck: Good luck to you and I hope he heals up quickly :huggles:
