Today I had my litter of pups microchipped and found out that from now on my name will stay on their record for ever, so if any of my pups would ever end up in the pound, and not be claimed, I will be notified and get the option to rescue the dog    :teehee: That is something I have been arguing for for many years, :D . I have written letters to various departments suggesting that but nobody ever even acknowledged them :( . But who cares, how it came about. I am so pleased, that if one of my pups would get dumped i can get them back :D

EXCELLENT RESULT

its good to know you can always be traced if needed isnt it :)

In Canada no purebred dog can leave the breeders premises unless it is permanently tattooed or microchipped or it will not be registered with the Canadian Kennel Club. We register 100% of the dogs we breed so no dog leaves our premises with being identified.

We have a tattoo combination that is ours alone that will allow CKC to immediately identify not just the dog by its registered name, but its breeder and the person(s) it was sold to if lost in future. We have our vet tattoo on the right flank, a painless, brief procedure that takes a few minutes or two per pup. The tattoo combination is quite clever... the first three letters of our tattoo identify us as holders of that combination, then there is a number -- the first pup registered that year is 1, going onwards from there through the litter. Additional pups from other litters resume from the last number used. The final park of the code is another letter -- each year is assigned a letter, so someone finding a dog can identify not only who bred and owned it, but hold old it is based on the year code.

We do occasionally also microchip dogs as requested by a purchaser or foreign exporter where a microchip ID is required. Again, CKC coding makes sure that dog, its breeders and owners are forever identifiable.

That sounds pretty much like the European system, Lanny. I would prefer tattoo, as you can always see it is still there and legible, you can never know the chip is OK except the moment it is checked (I do ask my vet to scan them everytime he sees the dog :b - call me paranoid).

People always told me that the pounds will never agree to contact the breeder and return dogs to them, that is why i am absolutely over the moon that it is possible. :D

Seraphina, I'm curious how you will be able to keep your name on the records? How is your system different from ours as I thought Victoria was adopting the NSW system and using the same database?

It's been law for many years now in NSW that no dog can be sold unless microchipped. So we microchip our puppies at 6-7 weeks when we vaccinate them at the vets. Then it's law to submit a change of ownership document if a dog is sold or rehoused. The paperwork is completed by the previous owner / breeder - and the new owner. The new owner specifies their name, address where the dog is kept, and the secondary address - which may be a relative - and signs the paperwork. There is no provision anywhere for my details as breeder to be kept against the dog.

My understanding that if and when animals are rehoused, the database is updated with the details as outlined on the Change of Owner paperwork. The problem often occurs that owners don't submit this paperwork or move house and don't have their details updated in the database. This means that many animals are ending up in pounds without their owners being contacted and their breeders have no idea.

Many times dogs are surrendered by owners. The dog is mircochipped but the pounds won't (and by law can't) give out the details of the dog - ie exact date of birth, who the previous owner/breeder was and who microchipped the dog which makes it impossible to work out who bred the dog. Sometimes Rescue Co-ordinators are given details because of relationships with people in the pounds but this is a rarity.

A few months ago I was contacted about a whippet I'd bred who was in an RSPCA shelter down south. The only reason I was contacted is because all my paperwork (puppy kit, registration papers) were surrendered with the dog. The owners never contacted me. Luckily he's now is a wonderful home up north and the new owner keeps in contact.

I think it's wonderful if breeders details can be kept and breeders contacted if a dog is surrendered or found, and it's something I've complained to the government about. I guess the flip side is many breeders don't want to be contacted.

Lanny, I understand you tattoo inner thighs whereas in Australia, most tattoos are in ears. Not a good look for whippets. As I had tattooed RR's for many years and we had a national register, the club petitioned to allow tattooing as a form of identification but it was rejected. The only breeds allowed tattoo id are greyhounds and I think GSD's but they still must microchip as well.

Cheers

Apparently, from now on, the the breeder's particulars stay on the registry for ever. The form has a space for the breeder's name, prefix etc and then the owner's particulars. And the breeder will be notified if the dog is abandoned and is about to be euthanised. We still do not have to microchip our pups, I think that becomes a law later this year. I started to microchip my litters some years ago, but in that time they were registered directly to the pup's new owners. I was trying to suggest in that time that i would like my name , as a breeder on their registration, and i would like to know if they were dumped so i can bail them out. I was told in that time i should try to persuade my puppy buyers to put me as the second contact.

Can you send me a copy of your form as I completed forms only last week (supplied by my vet) and there certainly isn't any provision for the breeder's details.

Is this going to be National?

Cheers

i have emailed it. :) I think my vet said that it started on the 1st of January. I am so glad i waited, I nearly had them microchipped with their first shots before xmas. Then i thought that 1 needle in a day is enough.

I have followed this topic with interest.

When we chip our rescue dogs, we (along with several other rescues) put our details as second contact, but if the owner wishes to change these details there is nothing we can do to stop them. I would love to see the rescues or breeders details staying on the records permanently in the U.K., I am sure that most breeders would want to re-home their own dogs if the original home failed.
