I have read previous threads about microchipping and I am wondering how the system works. Ruby is being chipped on Friday at the vets. Is chipping done by different companies? Do you get paper-work? Are all records kept by a single database? Is the chip always put in the shoulder?

I would be grateful to know what to expect.

Thanks in advance

The chip is usually put under the skin inbetween the shoulder blades Pauline, it is about the size of a piece of rice which is injected in through a type of very sharp funnel thing, it may bleed a bit and she may cry for a couple of seconds because it stings, but better that than having no identification and the piece of mind is worth it IMO

The data then goes on computer and goes to a large pet database which vets ect have accessto.

You should get paper work with a barcode and number of your chip on it and also a tag for her collar to tell others that she is chipped thats how mine works anyway :)

Hope that helps a little :)

 Thanks Lesley. Does that mean that there are different companies but all the details go onto the same database? I suppose that's what I am worrying about really. I was confused as to whether chipping is carried out by different companies and that it might depend who has done it as to how well the system works.

Cheers

hi pauline, all mine have the bio therm microchip which the difference is the pets temperature can also be read by the scanner, costs around £30 ,but apart from that lesley covered all the main details

Thanks Trish. I've got Ruby booked in at the vets, but just found out our LA Dog Wardens do them for £11 (or free for people on a benefit). :D Will have to give them a ring tomorrow.

I'm not sure if its one big database or not to be honest Pauline  but I think the scanners can scan for all chips then find out where it belongs so to speak, it might be worth asking the vet, my puppies are booked in for the 14th so you will see your vet before me so will you let us know if you find out :D

Both my two have them, Scrumpys has moved from the back of his neck to the top of his right leg :(

Just a quick comment on micropchips. I recently upgraded to the petlog premium so i could add holiday addresses etc free of charge and found that Pippa - my white lurcher was recorded as being black! Have since checked the ferrets details and for two apparently i live in Afganistan - they are wimpy boys and dont suit cammo! I would advise that after chipping you call petlog and check that your details have been inputted correctly. Discrepancies from the original form should be changed for free without paying to upgrade. Unfortunately the paperwork you receive doesnt have all the info on so since they have been done i didnt realise the errors.

All my animals are chipped and i think they are a great idea. The dogs and ferrets while chipped by different manufacturers chips are all registered on Petlog. The cat however was chipped with identichip - I presume it scans as normal but would prefer him to be with petlog as well. This reminds me to check out whether this chip is useful or not and how it works.
