This one is a little more recent to happening & quite a 'sore' subject for my little Rat..

This afternoon dad took the dogs for a walk knowing very well that Bella is in season and insisting that he walks her still off the lead.

Anyway cut a long story short - a Spaniel got on the case chased her around the village/fields etc, after 2 hours of searching to my relief she was discovered in a brook pitch black with the other dog. With a warm welcome by a very protective brother Basil :sweating:

I have spoke to the Vet and she said it would be best to inject her once her season has finished. Has anyone else had this problem before, did their bitch have problems with coming back into season once they have had the injection?? As I am hoping to breed from Bella in around 2/3 years time and dont think that 'splurchers' will be my cup of tea.

Many thanks Tom - Bella has just been freshened up by a nice warm shower and clean sheets, Basil has been lying on the floor as he won't share a bed with his naughty sister

Your dad "INSISTED" in taking your in-season bitch for a walk, OFF the lead, and you let him ??? Rather irresponsible dog ownership, don't you think ?

Cheers.

when a bitch is inseason,,,,i would tend to take them out on there own,,not with another dog--big no,,no -_-

I always walk Bella on the Lead for atleast a month while on heat. (same with my mum) We always tell Dad to walk her on the lead but he was, were there should be no other dogs on private land. I think the word insisted was incorrect more like assumed that there would be no other dogs for her to have little trot or aukward old git. So correct that there is irresponsible ownership on his behalf

Any advice on the injection side of the question??

Tom, when we lived up at Oxford & had Salukis & Lurchers together, a mistake mating took place - due to my carelessness, but the vet injected the lurcher bitch the next day, & she went on to have 2 litters with absolute no problems. How many days was Bella into her season ?? I totally agree about 'splurchers' though !!....................mistakes do happen....

Many years ago a mongrel got to one of my Lurcher bitches; I had the vet teminate any pregnancy with the needle. There wasn't any after effects with the bitch and she had normal seasons after that. Best of luck with her.

Cheers.

Poor Bella :( I think there a far too many unwanted pups around to even consider planned breeding, let alone allowing an accident to happen and then continue to produce pups.

On this occasion, I would follow your vets advice and have your beautiful girl injected. What will be, will be, but at least she will be able to continue her young life uninterrupted. I am sure some of the experienced breeders on this site will be able to advise you on potential pitfalls following injection but as I don't breed dogs and have never experienced a "mistake" happening I'm sorry I don't have any specific advice.

Maybe you could give your dad some advice  ............. "DON'T WALK A BITCH OUT WHEN SHE'S IN SEASON, EVEN ON A LEAD, AND ABSOLUTELY NEVER IN A PUBLIC AREA WHERE THERE ARE OTHER ENTIRE DOGS AROUND!!! "

I sound cross about this happening because I am, Tom, but not with you ...... with your dad

My grammer is not great - The dog which I have persumed to have mated with my bitch is not owned by my family. It had tracked the bitch down and had chased her.

Thanks 'Goran' for the reply to my question. She is around the time of mating (12 days-ish) Also her tail was raised to the side when washing her, so shows the signs of being ready

There are tablets and sprays available to mask the scent of an in-season bitch, they aren't 100% effective, but do give some protection against unwanted attention from dogs; but the bitch MUST still be kept on a lead.

Cheers.

It is difficult to know whether she has been mated or not by the spaniel, but from experience I would say at 12 days if Bella let him, the odds would be that she could conceive, so am curious as to why your vet wants to inject her at the end of her season, without checking my records, there is a time limit as to when you can have the 'termination' injection, sooner the better really. IMO Bella is a crackin bitch & put to the right dog, the pups should be 1st class, so good luck & go for it !!!!......

I totaly agree with the far too many pups - and have quite a strong opinion on this subject..

She is definatley having the injection what ever the outcome for future years. Just wondered what people have experienced with bitches in the same perdiciment as mine.

Fingers crossed she will come into season in the future after having the injection. Planning on mating in around 3 years time - she will be 6+ and her mum what we got will be over 10 years old so should be time for a restock.

My Dad has had a very precise talking too  - Mum thought the 'F' word wasn't on till next week

We've had to have the injection a couple of times over the years but our vet has always said within 48 - 72 hours after the mating. The dogs have been ok afterwards. Check again with your vet.

Thanks for the reply.

Been back to the vets this morning. Shes having injections on monday and wednesday of next week

So I guess it's your dad in the 'doghouse' this week then! What a plonker! Although that's exactly the sort of thing my dad would do. :D I don't know anything about the injections etc. but I just wanted to say what a gorgeous bitch Bella is. What is her breeding? She's really beautiful.

Dad has been in the dog house, hopefully its a lesson for me to learn by aswell and hopefully wont happen again.

Her make up is not fully known but here we go;

This is a most recent family shot - Smooth bitch Willow which is the dam of Bella - When we got her we were told she is W/G, border collie x - the rough dog Basil is litter brother to bella.

Here is Bella with her sire Kade - Not 100% sure but believe hes mostly W/G with Bearded & Border Collie x.

So if that dosen't make any sense - just lurcher to lurcher x. Or better known as the 'little rat' & 'the old donkey' (bella & basil)

Kade's sire is my whippet x greyhound(Stag Night & Micks Mystery lines), his mum is a blue merle, collie/?deerhound/greyhound. I will see if I've got a photo of her somewhere.
