I'm wanting to build up the muscles on my bitch in order that she can twist and turn more tightly. Has anyone got any suggestions?

Spend a couple of hours a day chasing rabbits and feed a high protein diet.

Funnily enough playing "frisbee" is also very good .............but yes free running after umm things is spot on

My dog, Rocket, has suffered spinal trauma and his waist, hip and rear leg muscles became wasted whilst he slowly regained control of his lower body.

To build up these muscles we take him to a canine hydrotherapy pool once a week and the improvement after each session is immediately apparant.

If this can be of benefit to an injured dog it could also help one with no injuries just as humans benefit from swimming.

Although I don't hold with the ethos of greyhound racing, there are a couple of owners who take their greyhounds to the pool we go to and they go about 5 days before a race to tone them up. Cost? about £16 for a half hour session.

How is Rocket? Hope to see him soon!
Hi Scott, he's started to lollop after his favourite frisbee which will improve his muscles in his back and legs but we do worry that he may try too hard and damage his back again. However we can't keep him "wrapped in cotton wool" for ever!

Hope to see you and Jo at Coppull this Sunday.

I`m not a racer, I work my whip , but as well as free running to build up muscle you need to road walk your whippets too. Mine gets about 2 miles a day, this with a fairly high protein diet builds and keeps muscle on her and my lurcher bitch .

What would you call high protein? I use a 30% protein dry dog food and raw meat.

It's about as high as I feel i dare go without running into kidney damage.

I'd like to substitute meat (minced tripe and muscle meat.) for kibble but the cost and availability prevents me from doing that.

BTW I race and course. Not much racing nowadays but I intend to get after the hare as much as possible this Winter.

What are you folks feeding?

Hi Tony ,Last season, when the dogs wereworking 2 or 3 times a week, I fed a complete greyhound food like Red Mills or similar which is about 28% protein. I also give them tripe and rabbit or hare as well. During the summer we have been feeding James Wellbeloved which is about 22% protein. It`s good stuff, but I`ve found that the dogs lost a bit of weight when we were feeding them on it,if they were working hard .

I feed redmills racer / traker 50/50 during the summer months.I find it perfect and my dogs don't lose condition. People think that the more expensive food are better for there dogs i.e wellbeloved, pedigree chum, omega, to name a few all i have found with the named feeds is they create loads of lose stools in my dogs.

Redmills Racer is fed to greyhounds worth thousands, i know two trainers who have around 200 dogs in training between them and there base feed is redmills racer. They feed resting dogs the redmills tracker.

I only feed redmills racer during the winter months no meat is fed with it as i've found it too much for my dogs, they become restless and irritated when fed meat.

They keep there condition well on the racer. if i work them really hard i just feed them a little more.
