To be honest, since a wee pup, Harry (2.5 year old whippet) hasn't been the biggest eater but recently he's been right off his food. The thing is that we only feed him biscuit as if we feed him meat, he has really bad diarrhoea. We have taken him to the vets about this and they've informed us that's not uncommon for a dog not to tolerate meat and a good biscuit is more than adequate. To be honest, I think the reason why he's not eaten is because his sick and tied of eating biscuit .

What do you all think, any advice would be greatly appreciated

What do you mean by 'biscuit'? Is this a complete food or just mixer alone? what brand do you feed?

I'm lucky as I've not had a dog intolerant to meat, and feed mine raw beef and sometimes veg or wholemeal mixer...

He eats Royal Canin

I feed mine James Welbeloved which is dry like Royal Canine but it does say on the bag to add warm water to bring out the flavour and soften the biscuits. I find my girls eat it faster when soaked rather than when it is dry. I also add lots of other bits to liven it up but know you will probably not be able to as his stomach gets upset easily.

Yes probably.. will give it a try. I heard scrambled eggs are good for them also ? is this correct

I wonder whether all meats upset him or only certain ones? Lamb is generally well tolerated, for example. Grace, who is about the same age, was deeply uninterested in food (I was giving her James Wellbeloved dry) until I started giving her butcher's dog mince (beef trimmings and heart) cooked together with some carrot and rice. That was fine until she got bored with it! Now she has Naturediet and I rotate the flavours, and she absolutely loves it and has filled out nicely. They do one for sensitive stomachs, with salmon and rice in it. Also one with lamb and rice. Might be worth trying? Not the cheapest solution but worth it if they actually eat a decent meal and thrive. Good luck :luck: :luck: :luck:

I would have thought that egg would be safe for him, one of mine will kill for Scrambled egg lol...half a sardine can get the taste buds twitching too!

What meat have you tried feeding him?

I know some one whose dogs can not tolerate beef but are fine with chicken and lamb.

I myself owned a GSD yers ago that could not eat chicken or chicken flavoured food either tinned or dried but he was fine on beef or lamb .

Bryn my whippetx is unable to tolerate beef and my boxer bitch can only tolerate chicken or fish.

Beef is notoriously the meat to cause problems with dogs who have sensitive digestion.

also I think if you add meat or fish etc in tiny amounts to start with, it will give his system a chance to get used to it slowly..this is the best way to introduce any new foods.

My whippet cross Tilly eats Burns but gets fed up of it unless I liven it up with either sardines or fresh chicken. I don't soften it with water because that reduces the effectiveness of the biscuit cleaning her teeth. Gracie the whippie has been on an enforced soft meat diet (Hill's ID) for the past couple of months because of a gut problem and I have noticed her back teeth have some staining on them. The sooner I can wean her back onto a hard diet, the better. I know it can be very frustrating and worrying with a dog that is picky so Good luck with him. :luck:

Hi, I have an 18month old whippet with pancreatitis (Bailey)..he is on royal canin sensitivity control but can tolerate hills dd tinned too. I know it is not the same problem but he has to have 5 small meals a day so I do 2 small biscuit meals and 2 small hills dd tinned salmon and rice (very bland) and the last meal of the day I mix a cpl tablespoons of boiled rice with a tablespoon of steamed veggies and some poached white fish. He tolerates the diet very well. My other two have the same routine now but with james well beloved dried and nature diet meat and the rice and fish meal later on. I have an older dog that has been very prone to upset tummy and anything rich has always caused her problems. I have decided to change them to the same routine as Bailey (but without the prescription diet obviously) They are all doing well and my 12 year old is thriving on it and no longer has a loose tummy ever. Sorry its a bit long winded but having had two with different problems just thought it might help to consider the small meals aspect and the rice etc as both problems have improved with this routine on different diets but it may adapt to your boy to keep him interested in eating!
