My dog insurance is up for renewal in Sept & as the premiums have gone up so much with M&S I've been ringing around for better quotes.

Hebes has gone up by £82 per year, Raffertys by just over £50 & Scrumpys by a mere £12 even tho she is the only one I've claimed for

I've rung loads of different companies & tbh there isn't much difference between them but the one that really stunned me was Sainsburys. When they asked what breed Hebe was I said "lurcher, which is basically a X breed"

Well, not according to them it's not. A lurcher is classed as a PEDIGREE DOG for their insurance purposes (w00t)

I told them even the KC don't see lurchers as pedigrees so how can they?

The lady went off to consult with her supervisor but still insisted on ped status for my Hebe.

So I said "Right, ask me the question again" She says what breed is the dog, I say "whippet cross" & she quoted me for a X breed  Madness.

Anyway after many calls I managed to haggle with M&S & got £3 per month knocked off the 2 older dogs policies so am staying with them as their benefits are certainly better than most of the others I've rung.

So now when anyone asks I can proudly tell them I've got 2 lovely pedigree lurchers :p

I'd stick to having whippet crosses then!

Insurance is getting ridiculous isn't it

It would be interesting to ask them what sighthound crosses constitute a pedigree lurcher. And I wonder what happens if some one has a rescue that is lurcher-ish?

Just another way to milk more money out of us, isn't it. :- "

I don't really what to say . . . . .

A ridiculously ridiculous way to swindle the innocent of more money

Quick thinking re getting her to ask you the question again, and coming back with the whippet x answer. I like your style

Dog insurance is getting silly! I had to haggle with Direct Line to get Fred's down by approx £3 per month, by deducting some of the cover. Now he's 11 years old, it has shot up to almost £30 per month

I blame it on my vets forcing me to make a claim for an emergency opthamologist consultation a year or so back, when all he had was a wet eye. A few months ago they wanted me to take him for urgent cardiology tests. I got a second opinion this time!

At the end of the day it's our claims that go up to cover all this extra preventative/investigative treatment that vets seem happy to dole out when it isn't always necessary.

Are you saying insurance is cheaper for a x-breed than a pedigree dog? If so, why?

Yes it's cheaper for a x-breed. The thinking is that a ped will be more likely to get certain hereditary conditions, eg liver shunt in Deerhounds or deafness in Dalmatians.

Nicola, you are right about people making more claims for things they wouldn't usually bother with. One of the many companies I phoned (I forget which) admitted as much when giving me a quote. They actually said that their premiums had gone up because more people were claiming for more things.
