Hello, last night i took my staff for a walk with my 2 children. we went to a small green/park area. my children were playing with my dog and another staff came running over from no where. i told my kids to come away from the dogs. i turned and the owner was across the road i shouted is your dog ok?. His answer was bit delayed, then he said yes. i turned and next thing the dogs are both fighting. i don't know what dog went for it first. iI was shouting at them to stop but i think my tone was wrong, so i changed it. and shouted firmly ghost leave it to my dog stopped fighting. my dog had a bite to his nose and mouth was bleeding inside. What i found strange is that the other owner never even called his dog. my dog is good both on and of the lead. he just walks past other dogs even if they are barking he does not even turn his head. same with cats don't touch them. and he will carry his own lead and when i say sit/stay ect he does it. At first i thought maybe the other dog was a dog in training for fighting but if that had been the case then the other dog would have carried on even if mine stopped. its really worried me now and i'm scared of taking him out.

ok wow somethink we have a debate on, i know there is good staffies and good staff owners but i am not a fan so i will try and be calm lol first id say i hope your dog is ok then lets be honest we all take a chance when our dogs are off lead so if your dog was offlead then we as owners must be aware that these things can and will happen, now if your dog was onlead then my size 9 boot would have been heading to the other dogs bollox if it approached my dogs and prevent my dog from getting bitten, but thats just me, some are softer and do different things.. all the best.

Sadly this is an issue which comes up time and time again for us Staffy owners, although Rocky is a Staffy cross he has been attacked by other breeds of dog on more than one occasion.

Of course you could keep your dog on a long training line which is probably the obvious answer,

that way you always have control of your dog while they have a bit of freedom to have a roam around. This is what I do with Rocky.

Have you had your dog checked over by the vet in case he has any wounds that may become infected ???

Please try not to be afraid when you take him out for walks as your nervousness will transfer down the lead to him.

Are you able to choose a different route for walking ?? If you see a loose dog approach and you can see the owner ask them if they can put thier dog on the lead, this is what I do.

Thankyou for replys. The main thing i don't get is why did the other owner not even call his dog.. and why was he so far away from it... I know that cant be answered lol. also although my dog was of the lead he was right next to my leg. even if he had been on the lead probs still would have been a fight. im not going to put him on a long lead as i think he needs good excersize to be able to play with the kids chase a ball that sort of thing.

and yes i can easy go a different route where i went is not the best place anyway it was only because my kids wanted to on a play ground toy. But when i happen to see a couple of dog walkers i know of. i might ask if they know of the dog. i don't think i would have kicked the other dog out of the way. as much as it sounds bad i would rather its the dogs that get hurt and not myself or kids.

kelly anne the reason that eejit didnt bother to call his dog is hes a muppet who discredits other good owners who care so one he dosnt care and two his staffie like many not all i should say is just a im hard ive got a staffie attitude.

update... i was just talking to my friend on FB and she told me a staff owner is going about has his dog on a lead lets of and it fights other dogs. it attacked a pug ripped its skin of from its neck... dog warden is aware of it and they are trying to catch him

oh you poor things, what a nasty thing to happen. Your dog sounds like a good lad if he stopped when told. I think that the only thing you can do is give him the benefit of the doubt, assume he was being defensive rather than aggresive and see how he is in the future, worrying about it too much could make him nervy. I'd observe him for a bit when he meets other dogs, maybe meet up with some known friendly ones, and see how he is. The fact the other owner didn't rush over is very odd and suspicious. Some people really don't care about their own dog or others. Hope your dog is healing well, he's a handsome chap!

Kelly anne what part of country you from? We got a staff iny area doing the same.. Owners like that make it bad for yje good ones.

Sadly some dog owners don't actually care if their dog harms other dogs. I am the first to admit that there are lots of lovely little staffies around who mean no ill harm to other dogs or people- but like with all breeds there are also those who aren't socialised properly or who are trained to attack others.

The fact that this man didn't seem to care about whether his own dog was being harmed (irrelevant of whether he cared about whether his dog was fighting and could harm yours) is rather worrying isn't it?

The possibility existed that your dog was on high alert because he was out with you and your children and he thought he was protecting you all from this other dog, but not caring about your own dog when it's fighting is just beyond me. If that was happening involving my dog then the 'she who must be obeyed' voice would have been exercised I'm afraid.
