Question for black whippet experts: a couple of the pups were browner than the others - looking closely the base of the hairs was fawn, the tip black. The breeder thought they'd grow out into full blacks, but I'm rather keen on it staying that way as with this one:

What do you think?

I think this bitch is a relation of my b&w stud, he has thrown a a few like this with an Airescot bitch. When you look at them they are solid blacks with markings that look like golden covering (hair is black and tip of hair is gold) in the same places as the pictures shows, i.e. side of neck, flank, thighs. Here is puppy pic in sharp sunshine.

Now as adults they vary from black to almost black in normal light depending on the season.

It is a spectacular effect on a black whippet, they look like silvertip grizzly bears :- )

And might I add... those puppies are scrumptious!!! I especially like the little fat blues :huggles:

Can i ask what the breeding was for the mother of the pups as she bears a remakable resemblance to one of mine :)) ...just wondering whether they could be related..this perhaps is a slightly stupid question as whippets can look quite a alike sometimes

thanx

What, the first pics? She is 'Flaming Midnight Dill'. Her breeding is mainly Laguna, with the odd dash of Shalfleet, Nimrodel and Martinsell. There are a lot of black whippets around with some of the dam's breeding, as Mike Brown's Sooty Sam and his descendants have more or less the same pedigree as the father of her dam (Dark Mood).

Malin, that's a lovely colour! I wish I could have 3 whippets :'( :'( :'(

But are they true blacks or heavily sabled fawns??? Personally, I don't like them, if I am going to have a black (or blue for that matter) it has got to be a true black not a wishy washy one!!!

Considering that mom is redfawn with light cream markings (look on the American site under "deer" fawn/brindle) the pups are either black or brindle genetically - take your pick. Every other litter from the sire has only produced non-wishy-washy black/blues.

As for the show ring a good "golden" black :- " is easier on the eye than a really inky black one - just less optical illusions happening. But then... all that drama in a Dracula black Whippet... yummy

Is this colouring unique to whippets (or sighthounds)? I can't think of other breeds that have it. The only ones I've seen that look similar are the occasional Patterdale, lurcher or crossbreed, which may well have some whippet blood in.

One of the things we like about whippets is the sheer variety of colour and markings!
