Our dogs hate getting their nails clipped everytime the nail clippers come out the bag they run a mile or hide under the kitchen table! Can any of the K9ers reconmmend something else to make my life easier and my dogs less stressed :thumbsup:

aww god i have terrible trouble with my ollie ,so i feel your pain hun ,blue and tia are fine i think its cause iv done them both since they were babies ,but ollie we didnt get him till he was over a year old so he really gets stressed when im doing them it takes me about 2weeks in all doing a little at a time as i have to literaly pin him down so will be interesting to see what everyone recomends :cheers:

as a dog groomer and ex vet nurse ive had a lot of experience in this with frightened dogs having their nails clipped.

here are some of my suggestions which i hope will give you hope!

firstly give them rescue remedy about 20 mins before you begin.

start with a hungry dog and have their most most most fave treat at hand.

lie on a sofa beside one dog with your clippers in your hand or just beside you - or if your dogs arent allowed to be on your sofas get on a cushion on the floor with a book as though your relaxing yourself for a while.

let them lie with you and with one dog beside you stroke him/her gently and talk to them gently as though praising them.

go very slow with this process as this is the key to helping them overcome their fear.just clip one claw of one dog and do not give eye contact then put away your clippers and walk away.

no fuss - one claw done and ignore your dogs.

if you did this over a few days you would get them all done and it will become much less of an issue for them and soon you will see that dogs react to us being nervous of doing something as soon as they jump or squeal.

it really does work over time believe me - the same with horses!

Hi,

I news to have the same problem with Fleet, he hated hain his nail clip. It was a two man job and good boy drops to try and cut his nail. He would scearm even before I had clip them or he would scream after.

So a few weeks again I decided to get a nail grainer and that was the best thing he will let me do them and there is no screaming. Which is great.

This is really good advice - Josie is still terrible about nails, and she was due for a snip, so I did this gradual approach :thumbsup: Brilliant! I've managed to clip both back feet during the course of the day, armed with cubes of raost beef (leftovers :- " ) and its been quite untraumatic. She's not happy, but we're getting there, so thanks animalady!
