Hi, This is Oscar. He came home a week ago and is settling in just great.

He is almost house trained and is really well behaved apart from just one thing...

He howls and whines when left at night{even for a couple of minutes}.....Does anyone have any suggestions?

we have tried to ignore him but he makes such a racket that it`s impossible.

please help.

He's lovely :huggles: Is he not a whippet?

You've just got to be strong and continue to ignore him. Whatever you do, do not go down. Either bang on the ceiling or shout from upstairs but don't go down as you are rewarding his beahviour.

I know it seems like it will never stop but he will in a few days :D

He's lovely  he looks a lot like my Ruby when she was a pup :)

I had both our pups in the bedroom when they were tiny, Ruby in her bed because she was such a good puppy o:) and Luna in a crate 'cause she was a wee monster :- " !

If you can stand it there are two main advantages... you can give them a bit of reassurance if they're a bit whingy... Luna was a bit of a whinger I used to have her in the crate next to me bed. I purposefully never said anything to her but just put my hand down to her when she seemed restless and that seemed to settle her. It's also easy to hear when they wake up needing the loo and you can pop them outside. It's hard but you're doing the right thing ignoring the whining... it may drive you mad  but it's a stage that'll pass.

They both now sleep with my daughter... Ruby is 2 and Luna is 8 months but they're equally happy to sleep in the livingroom.

 I could not see the picture on your other post! I agree he is gorgeous!!

Don’t worry about him howling and whining during the night. This is quite common. Although Oscar is settling in great, at night he will miss his mother and his littermates the most and it will take him some time to get used to being on his own at night. You are doing the right thing by ignoring him. I know how hard this can be! But unless you want him sleeping in your bed, it is best to keep ignoring him. :- "

There are a few things you could do to make it a little easier for him. Leave an unwashed jumper or something else that smells of the family with him when you put him to bed at night. This may sound silly but it sometimes also helps if you wrap a hot water bottle filled with warm water and a ticking alarm clock in a blanket and put it in his bed. The warmth will imitate the body heat of his littermates and the ticking of the clock will imitate their heartbeat.

You may also want to try a product called the DAP diffuser. DAP stands for Dog Appeasing Pheromone and it looks like a plug-in air freshener. The DAP diffuser releases a pheromone that a bitch releases after giving birth to her puppies. It has a calming effect on puppies and adult dogs without being sedative. This can help him to cope better with being on his own at night.

I work for the Eukanuba Care & Advice Line and a few people have also told me that it helps if you sit with your puppy until he falls asleep, even if it takes a while. This way you will avoid him feeling left behind.

Ahhh that is so sweet!.He obviously loves you so much....and he didn't even wake you up. I should leave him there

Puppies are always lovely but sometimes they're even more lovely when they're asleep :D

when you are ready to go to bed put him in his crate lay a duvet on the floor turn out lights and lay with your hand on the crate so he can smell you, takes 15/20 mins for them to fall asleep and you can then quitely go to bed 2/3 nights of this and he will be sleeping like a baby

He is adorable!

Have you tried putting one of your jumpers you have worn or something in his crate?

Zulu was a nightmare sleep-wise and it is only the last 2 weeks that he has been sleeping in the kitchen in his crate. We tried all sorts of things. In our bedroom in a crate - he'd cry to be let out every few hours. In our bedroom in a basket - he'd try and jump on the bed every 20 minutes and want to go out at least 3 times during the night. In the kitchen in a basket - he would try and bash the kitchen door down and scream but the crate in the kitchen has worked best for us where he sleeps till 6.45am.

You have all my sympathy, there were times when I thought I was never going to get a good nights sleep again. It does get better. :huggles:

thanks rach found them, yes he is a sweetie isnt he

Awww he is lovely!

We had sleeping problems with Poppy but just stuck with it and took some good advice from people on here and this morning she slept through until 8am!

I'm afraid I cheated with all mine and spoilt them rotten  Having said that, I've never had to get up in the night and they have all slept without a sound from day one :D

As pups they slept in/on bed with us and gradually they have grown up with the run of the house overnight. Nowadays they choose to sleep either in their own igloo beds upstairs, with us in/on bed or downstairs on their beds/furniture - it's left entirely up to them and works a treat

Same here ours sleep in the bed with us or on their own bed next to urs or where ever they want to really never had any problems even the puppy we had no problem with

we must've hit the jackpot with Ella, she's 3 now but from day one she didn't peep at all during the night............she's still a lazy madame :D

she had her crate in the kitchen at first, covered with a thick banket, then it moved to the playroom, then when she learnt her place in our pack it moved to daughters bedroom while we decorated downstairs and now she goes into one of those snuggle sacks in the bedroom where she stays all night ( and would stay all day if you let her -_- )

:luck: with your puppy

How lovely (w00t) good luck with your new baby.I love him
