 Big news yesterday from the Hound Club of NSW Championship Show, where Electra's son Spot became Ch Ridgesetter Made In USA (IID), congratulations to Toni and John.  Judge was Mr DJ Hyman  (USA).  I wasn't there so I can fill in a lot of details other than Spot got the dog points.
This makes up Champion Number 10 for the Wicked Whippet & Australian Champion Number 3 for dad Dino (DC Summit Autumn Gabardine Martin CD SC).

And in other news Electra was ultrasounded this morning and has possibly 7 babies cooking in what will be her last litter.  And the possible proud "fathers"?????  Her grandson Isilwane Ice Age  (sired by Davina Planned Precision - Rothbury/Martinique bloodlines & going back to Woodbrooks on his mothers side) and her son RUBISS Ch Isilwane Jolly Roger (sired by Woodbrooks Wizard of Oz (Imp Fin)).  This was not an accidental dual mating but planned and after watching the litter in the US grow up I'm looking forward to seeing what we get and from whom.

Why on earth would you use two sires, one being her own son!!!!!!???????? and her grand son. surely that is an indecently close mating, something most people would just not contemplate. Also why two sires?????????? What is the point, you are interfering with nature.

Interfere with nature? Whaaa do you think dogs run around with notepads asking each other what their COI% before they choose potential mates...

Get's really old people on here telling everyone else what they should and shouldn't be doing with their lines. Pay attention to your own backyard and keep you noses out of everyone elses.

Anyway, Good luck with your babies Lisa. Electra is gorgeous, I've been a fan of hers since I saw her last year at the Vic whippy champ show. She has such a lovely side gait.

We are all interfering with nature the minute we choose to put any dog to any bitch and stop letting them choose for themselves!

I should probably let Lisa speak for herself but I've just looked at the pedigrees and Electra herself is the result of an outcross mating and the son and grandson are the results of sires which are again quite removed from Electra's immediate lines - I'm no genetics expert but I would venture to say that there is quite a bit of diversity in these matings.

Plus you need to have a look at pedigrees from some of the top English kennels - which are held in high regard by many people - some of the matings they've done have been quite close and they've been acclaimed for what they've produced.

Congratulation to all winners over the weekend.

All the very best with your very exciting upcoming litter Lisa.

Bertha instead of starting an argument in this thread please read the other threads on Dual mating and a couple of other threads on genetic's regarding the pro's and con's. After reading all of it maybe you will understand the reason why a little better.

Thanks everyone for the congrats on Spot finally getting his title. He's not been shown much as he really doesn't like the showring and I don't think it's right to push dogs into an environment they're not really happy with. He's a real sweetie at home and loves getting bossed around by the girls. So I've only ever shown him at club shows and major shows and on Monday, he was very happy and showed his head off. Maybe it was because he was a little excited by being in close proximity to my friends RRs who were in season. However, Ridgepet or Whipridges were not on my agenda! :D

As for Electra and Lisa's choice of sires, that's her decision. Each and every one of us makes breeding choices, registers and/or shows puppies and/or sells puppies to people that other breeders may not agree with. Over the years (and it's been quite a few), I've learnt one big lesson and that is to sit back and watch. Whilst something might be interesting and gossipy, if it doesn't directly concern me, then it's not worth wasting energy on. I have enough to worry about without getting all heated up over what someone else is doing.

Bertha, I trust this won't develop further but I would like to say if you believe in the wild there weren't mother / son or father / daughter matings or other close matings, I think you'll find you're mistaken. Study the prospective pedigrees and not that I really get into this, look at the coefficients and I think you'll see that the pedigrees will not be as close as many other line bred litters.

In closing, as the proud breeder of Electra, I sincerely hope that she whelps a great litter with more potential champions and then gets herself back into shape to get those last elusive points for her Grand Championship. Whether you like her or not, she's been a formidable bitch in the ring, a fantastic dam and a wonderful companion to Lisa, Michael and Harley and done so well considering her time away in the USA and time out from shows for her litters. Go Electra.

Cheers

 Congratulations!

Both to Lisa on her upcoming litter and to Spot who has become a Champion!

:luck: to you all :D

 So sorry, didn't mean to forget Vesna!

 Congratulations  on your title too! :D

Many thanks to all for their comments on Electra (and Spot & Vesna - and yes Lana as usual Electra has hijacked the conversation :)) )))

As Lana and Toni have pointed out the pedigrees of all the dogs involved are fairly significantly outcrossed, and having bred Ridgebacks for 24 years where I have generally "gone out one, gone in one" each generation, even I thought it was time to line breed and particularly on my Wicked One. I decided to go with the grandson after lots of thought and discussion (all over the place). But we had some concerns about if he was "functioning" correctly after the first mating and since she is 7 1/2 and this will be her last litter I made the decision to put Nugget her son to her as well. We did do a second mating with the younger dog and everything was much more normal - so we now wait and then do the DNA testing and take it from there.

I will say that this is not a mating I would do in Ridgebacks, the breed is not robust enough and has two major faults that the dogs are born with that should preclude most people from doing it. That said in talking to Whippet people of all different kennel persuasions it was the general consensus that most would do it with what they considered the right dogs.

One thing as well is that with Electra having had 3 litters for 11 sons with 22 testicles and the four litters her kids have produced so far also going this way I'm more than happy to line breed on her.

To Lisa & Toni. Many congratulations to you both for your wonderful wins. All I can say about Queen Electra is Go Girl! She's one in a million, she'll have wonderful puppies AND get her Gr.Ch.

In the wild, I would think bitches not only mate with their siblings & close relatives but multiple males too while the current dominant dog reigns supreme. Then, when he is ousted another dog serves everything in sight for a few years & so on. I have a bitch presently in season, she & her father are so desperate to get at each other, she's out in the car while I work.

Go for it Lisa & all the very best to you. Hope you'll post some piccies but of the litter.

Love Gail.

Sorry for the late acknowledgements and my thank yous.   :D    Been a bit busy with an ill mum. work, 4 girls in season and some very interested boys.
Love the shot of Electra in Lisa's lap but that is not the Electra I'm used to.  She's not called wild and wicked for nothing.  Lisa told me Electra went BOB last Saturday in Sydney which is amazing as those who know her well, heard that she took herself off kangaroo hunting 6 weeks ago and stupidly decided to take the roo on in the dam.  Luckily, she's alive but she underwent two and a half hours of surgery and 80 stitches!   (w00t)

I know Lisa thinks she's a tough old girl, but my heart is always in my throat when I hear of her escapades.  (For K9ers not familiar with Oz, Lisa lives on 650 acres surrounded by thousands of acres of state forest and with the drought, the roos come up to the house yard to graze and Electra doesn't take kindly to them.)  Fingers crossed she'll settle down in her mature years and enjoy lying in front of the fire rather than hunting.

Cheers
