A top behaviourist from COAPE has developed a diet that helps to calm and improve a dog's mood. A happier dog is easier to train. Take a look at the website -

Can't post a link but if you search Breakthrough Dog you should find it. It is a complete food and it works by lifting the dog's emotional state. This helps with fear related problems such as barking at other dogs etc.

There has been a home made version around for many years but this is the first time it has been included in a complete diet. I know the homemade version works.

Hia i searched for breakthrough dog and got breakthroughK9 services ..they are based in the USA ..is this the same comapny ..if so they use awful methods to train dogs like shock collars etc and still teach dominance and pack leader theorys etc ..

I don't think so Raven. I saw something about this dog food before I think, it definitely wasn't a US 'training' company. And having read Gypsysmum's posts on this forum, it would be extremely out of character for her to suggest a company that uses these methods. I found a Twitter link - https://mobile.twitter.com/breakthroughdog?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw

Yea .i thought the same :) Would love more info on this food but my search engine is rubbish and thats the only one it came up with ...sounds very interesting

I tried to post a link but failed. NO it is nothing to do with that US company!

The behaviourist in question is Val Strong. Her colleague, Peter Neville, who some of you will know from his articles in Dogs Today magazine, is doing a lot of the promoting of it. He is active on Facebook.

The idea of the food is that it lifts the emotional wellbeing of the dog and so makes it happier. This, in turn, aids learning. The only downside is that the dog will enjoy all aspects of life more. This means that if the undesirable behaviour is being enjoyed by the dog then it will do it more! For instance, things like jumping up, chasing things etc may get worse as the dog enjoys them. All behaviour driven by anxiety, fear, depression should improve. Any, reward based, training will be easier as the dog will enjoy it more.

Owe thankyou for that , the link did work

It makes perfect sense to me that a diet like this would work ..im really busy with lambing and kidding arm but have bookmarked this to read later ..thanks again x

Do you have goats Raven Oaktree? We used to keep lots of them. Had a few sheep too but mostly goats. I do miss them, Such characters! Don't miss the milking schedule though :)

My Timber came from a farm where they bred rare goats! And there are Castlemilk Moorits near us here. Small world. Or we are neighbours and didn't realise it!

I was joking a bit but you never know - I'm in Fife.

Ahhh noo ..we are in Wales but it is a small world and amazing who you meet in daft places
