Hello,

Have been to see cavapoo and we hope to get him all being well in 3 weeks time when he will be 11 weeks old.
These people are breeders for many years, all seems very good, seen mum & dad and where pups were raised etc. they did lots of checks on us etc, but they seem to reject idea of crate being good idea for pups.
All other info on internet and I read good article on here are more favour.
My questions are:
- would adding/trying crate at this stage confuse the pup more?
- we have a small utility room - we could use this to section off the lip for his own ‘safe space’ with a puppy gate instead of using a crate?

Hope this makes sense.
Thanks,
Conor.

There are mixed views on crate training - crates are great for keeping puppies safe for short periods, but on the other hand, dogs shouldn't be left in them for hours on end just for our convenience. Your puppy needs company, dogs are social animals.

Personally, I think it's a good idea as he will need to be crated at some stages in his life, like after vet visits or visits to the groomer while waiting for collection. He may already be stressed in those situations so if he is already accustomed to the crate, that's one less thing to be worried about.

Whether you use a crate or your utility room, your puppy will need to be trained to be happy there.

We have an excellent guide to crate training (and the same principles will apply to using the utility area) in this section of the forum - I'm linking the page with several articles I hope you will find helpful and interesting.
