My whippet pup is 8 weeks old. I feed him 4 meals a day. Morning complete food with bio yogurt. Mid morning raw chicken mince. Mid afternoon complete food. Evening meal raw chicken mince. In the morning his first poos are hard and dry and he cries when passing. What can i give him or do to make it a bit easier for him to go to the toilet.

I don't know how well this would work you can try goats milk, It wont hurt your puppy so its worth a try good luck and sending lots of :huggles: to you and your pup.

Sorry - I didn't make that bigger in order to "shout" at you, I just wanted to make sure it stood out.

Instead of raw chicken, why not try tinned Butcher's tripe (I think they do a puppy version) - or one of the tinned/pouch puppy foods (Pedigree?). I don't usually like Pedigree tinned food but would prefer it for a puppy.

Or what about frozen tripe? That would be better for a pup, defrosted of course! :D You can get it from most pet stores. It even comes in "free flow mince" form so you only have to take out what you need, not defrost the whole lot at once which you'd have to do with a block of frozen tripe.

Good luck with your baby, but he sounds constipated if his poos are hard and dry, and he shouldn't be crying when he has to open his bowels. If you're worried, take him to the vet.

Keep us posted will you? Oh yes, and goats milk is good for baby pups.

Most of what wilfred says is right except I WOULD NOT FEED POUCH/TINNED it is full of c**p.

Tripe is exactly what it is nothing added or taken out.

There would be another debate as to feed milk or not that is down to the individual, we do but lots don't.

That's why I was a bit hesitant about mentioning pouch/tinned food too, but if they want something that's not "dry" like the complete food - it was the first thing to come to mind.

Other things that have now popped into my head are: scrambled egg, rice pudding ... I'm sure more things will occur to me later :) I was just so worried about the raw chicken mince (and I'm not saying it again in order to make tweed anxious or feel "got at").

Tripe is really good.

NatureDiet is very good, and they do a puppy version. It comes in small plastic tubs (and I certainly wouldn't describe the ingredients as rubbish).

However, if you are going to switch diets, then do it very gradually (mix a little bit in with the dry in incrreasing amounts over a couple of days) or you'll have a puppy with an upset stomach on your hands.

My pups started having the end piece of a RAW chicken wing since they were 4.5 weeks old,& some of the meat off it too. I have done this for years with no problems,as have many others!!!

I wouldn't feed any puppy(or adult) on commercial crap as it'll do far more harm putting nasty colourants/toxins etc into their system!

I've pmed you Tweed

Personally I would take him off the complete food and feed minced raw meats, beef, chicken, tripe etc. Also oily fish, and if you wish a bit of cereal and goats milk whilst still a puppy.

I'm not actually against the BARF diet per se ... and certainly we used to give ours the raw chicken wings til we had a scare, went to the vets, dog (not a whippet) had a blockage and the vet was concerned about the sharp bits of bones which were there, inside the dog's intestines etc etc.

I think raw chicken wings are an excellent "tooth brush" - we used to freeze ours first and then defrost them.

But after the major scare we had, to clear our dog's tummy blockage I haven't gone back to using raw chicken wings.

I wouldn't slate anyone else for using them - it's just I remember how worried we were at the time - and this was YEARS ago! (w00t) (Maybe freezing them first might have made them brittle? I don't know ... but it did put me off). and certainly our dogs loved them so much that they weren't always particular about chewing every mouthful 30 times before swallowing - that was how the large-ish pieces of sharp bone came to be in the blockage.

As for feeding dogs raw beef, I think I read on here some time ago, that beef needs to be frozen and then defrosted before giving to dogs (something in raw beef which is dangerous to dogs but not to humans? I'd have to check again). We always freeze the beef marrow bones we get from the butcher, before giving them to the dogs.

all my puppies and adults are fed raw with no ill effects as for tinned meat have you read the ingredients? keep up with your diet your giving your puppy the best start in life Salmonella is not a problem to dogs
