Hello!

This is my first post! I have enjoyed reading about all of your gorgeous whippet puppies and looking at your pictures. We have recently reserved our first whippet puppy who is now 4 weeks old. We will be picking him up when he is 11 week old but I am starting to get things ready as I am so excited!!!!

I would like to buy a crate for Bailey, but I am unsure what size to buy and which make. I am also considering buying a puppy play pen for him to play in when his is unsupervised to keep him and my home safe!!!

Any advice which you could give would be fantastic especially on size of crate.

The picture is of him when he was 2 weeks old !

ohh he is so cute, hope the wait goes quickly for you.

Crates are great, do you have any idea of what size he'll end up ? our Ella is very small (20 lb) and loved her crate for ages, her litter mates were all bigger and soon outgrew their crates.

Some whippets will easily escape a playpen, Ella wouldn't even attempt to jump it although she'd be capable of, one day I put her bean bag up on the table out of her reach as I hadn't time to wash her feet and was rushing out to school, when we got back she was snuggled in it on top of the table !!

BTW Where is Bailey from ?

Congratulations on your new whippet pup ... he's gorgeous

I would recommend a crate that will still be big enough for an adult whippet to stand up in, move about freely in and stretch out in as once they adopt the crate as their own special den, they love it and will continue to use it as an adult. If you put lots of nice snuggly blankets in there he will make his own wee nest out of it.

I'm not too sure about the puppy play pen - I would worry that a pup would try to jump out and could hurt himself in the process. Probably best to encourage play time to be something that happens with you and if he has to be left alone for short periods that these become quiet, sleepy times.

Looking forward to seeing lots of puppy pics when you get him home :D

Congratulations on your new pup , he is gorgeous :D

I would get a bigger crate than is recommended for the biggest size whippet . He should be able to move around in it when he is adult sized . i wouldn't bother with the puppy play pen as he would soon be able to jump out . You can always put him in his crate with a kong when you need to leave him for short periods :D

Congrats, welcome and good luck very cute pup, and great name

Bailey looks superb. Welcome to K9, I agree with former posts about the crate.

Good luck and post lots of pictures. :)

Bailey will be gorgeous when he's a big boy!!

I bought the large size crate from Argos for mine. Its not too sturdy but I dont think whippets are very strong?

Its just the right size for a single duvet folded into 4, robot duvet cover optional!!!LOL

I found, and still find, the playpen invaluable. Not so much as a pen - Grace very soon made it clear that she wasn't keen on being confined in it - but in sections it is ideal for screening off areas you don't want your pup to get into. For me, it was bookshelves (Grace tends to be a bookworm  ) and areas where there were dangerous electrical wires etc. For a long time I had a couple of sections across the door of the room where the best furniture lives (prevention being better than cure  ). A crate was very useful for getting her used to being in the car, and I bought a small size because it fitted in best. Now it is used to confine the greediest of my four cats at meal times so that she doesn't scoff everyone else's dinner!

Hope you have a lovely time with Bailey when he arrives - he is gorgeous  .

Thank you all for your advice!

Bailey is from Willowood whippets in Wiltshire, I'm not sure how big he will be, mum is quite small and he is from a litter of 9.

I am so excited and will def be posting losts of pictures when he arrives!

Hi there and welcome to k9

:luck: when your new pup arrives :sweating:

Our pup is 8 months old now  and has a 30 inch crate from 'The Range' we will continue to use this size for travelling in the

car :) but yesterday we purchased the next size (36 inch) also from 'The Range' for sleeping in to give him a bit more room to

stretch out as he sleeps in it all night :huggles:

Hi Kendall is just over 6 months now. I got the 36" crate from dog health via ebay as cheaper than direct to them! It came with a divider which I used when he was small so it was not too big, and also clip on bowls. It is very sturdy and has an up and over door which is great so it isn't sticking out into the room. When not in or upstairs I put him in that with a stuffed kong or similar and he loves his crate - sees it as his space!

Welcome to k9 - Bailey looks a cutey and I love the name.

Bluebell has a 30 inch cage which is plenty big enough for her...not that she's ever been in it, but the thought is there 8)

I'd go for the next size up if possible, and you could also check that it fits in your car

Good luck and lots of updates please!!!

Are you in Wiltshire too?
