Hi I have a cockapoo puppy he’s 10 weeks 4days. He’s lovely but goes from calm and loving to jumping about playfully all over the place . I guess he’s just being a puppy but it’s new to me. Any advice about new puppy behaviours expectations etc helpful - thanks

Welcome! Yes, he sounds like a normal puppy. Do reward the calm moments, e.g. a small treat when he's resting calmly on his bed. It's easy to only give him attention when he's causing mayhem.

Hello, congratulations on getting a new puppy.
I think a few questions and answers may be required first so that we can understand why your puppy may be behaving like this, although being excited and having fun is what a lot of puppies do!
How long have you had your puppy, what type of food and what make of food do you feed. How does your puppy spend it's day with you and where does it sleep at night.
Our dogs and puppies are very social creatures, they do need plenty of human contact and company, and they do have loads of energy, at 10 weeks of age some puppies are desperate to do some proper and simple learning !
Please tell us more.

Yes he likes to play in the garden, we’ve had him just 5 days. He sleeps in his bed and is very happy there. He’s able to sit on command I’d say half the time we ask him/ he gets lots of praise and a treat when he does the right thing. We are open plan so have a play pen but he is out of it more and more each day to explore our house /room downstairs. We use puppy pads but he will go to the toilet when we take him to the garden and we’ve only had a couple of accidents. he’s very loving and calm but when he plays he’s very lively. Yes also started buying the puppy pads and his blanket but he does have gnawing toys that he loves.Hello, congratulations on getting a new puppy.

Be aware that using puppy pads you are teaching him it is acceptable to toilet inside the house and once he is older he will choose where he wants to toilet inside and it won't be on a puppy pad.... and you will have to retrain toileting outside from the beginning, so you are doing yourself or the pup no favours using puppy pads
We use them inside for accidents but take him out regularly and he’s getting used now to going to the toilet when he goes out.

It sounds like normal puppy behaviour to me. If he would not be lively at times, particularly when playing...I would get worried. At that age their behaviour can be from one extreme to other....one minute they can be fast a sleep and totally unaware of the world and next..run around, throwing toys around like there is fire under its tail But it is not like that every day. Dogs do have quiet days and more of 'energetic' days too...just like us they feel slightly different each day. As a puppy owner, your job is to observe and learn what is typical to your dog as each dog has their individual energy levels. Once you start recognizing what is kind of 'norm' for your pup, then you can tell difference when they are not their usual themselves and take action to correct the situation...particularly when they will need to see a vet.
When dogs are young, they do have habit of pushing their activity levels and get over tired...that's when they start 'behaving badly' in our human standards. Just like human babies/toddlers, puppies too can get bit cranky when over stimulated and they don't want to sleep/get enough rest....so keep eye on when this start happening. You will then have to start to learn to calm him down earlier on to prevent that happening (good luck) and what method works with him. All our pups have had period of that kind of behaviour and I have usually tackled it by placing the pup into calm place, given a chew to consentrate on..maybe even hold it for it to start with until it really has got interested with it and once so...left it to carry on with it on its own. That kind of interaction is good bonding exercise to start with but also when it spends time chewing, it will calm down and eventually dog's brain will get tired and sleep will follow. When their teeth are around chew they don't use it for something that you don't like being chewed on Enjoy your deep learning curve with your pup....there will be difficult times ahead and he will test your patience, but when you face them...we are here to help and remember, puppy stage does not last long...within a year they are teenagers and that is another chapter for you to learn!
