Like Steve, I've decided life is too short to be sparing with the whippets, and feel now is just the right time, before our current dog/cat are too old to cope with a youngster.

BUT

I'd really like the next one to be a bitch, and I'm not too keen on neutering. How difficult is it keep a dog and bitch together? Will we have weeks of constant whining/pining all through the night? I'm not keen on neutering, although I would consider it as a last resort.

Am I mad to entertain this idea?

Hi

I have 4 dogs and 3 bitches plus a male greyhound When the bitch comes in season ( the other 2 are her 5mth pups) as she is now until about the 10th day I don't have much problem as long as they are supervised Tegan stays with the boys I mean at night when watching telly . She does not go in the garden with the boys only with the 2 other girls. After about the 10th day she goes upstairs in a cage I will not just rely on doors between them especialy with children who might forget to shut the door

In the evening she comes downstairs andgoes in the corner in a cage this is because I don't like to separate them completely for three weeks. I don't know if it my boys who are very laid back everyone said I would have trouble keeping dogs with bitches.

If Ihave any whinning or barking I finda dose of rescue remedy works well. I will say of my males is the sire of my pups and also mated a visiting bitch only the week before Tegan came into season but he is nt at all interested in her even thugh she is 12 days int her season. Also the boarding kennels that I use when going away will also take Tegan if I feel she is proving to much for the boys to cope with but this is only used as a last resort I prefer t keep her at home if pssible

Yes, I did wonder. I once visited a breeder of Whippets/IGs who had a bitch on heat running freely with the dogs (at least while she was supervising them), they just weren't interested. It really surprised me actually.

The one thing that made me wonder is that ours seems to have no interest in some bitches at all when they're on heat; he has a couple of spayed 'girlfriends' that he does like, and will try to mount. I have a feeling it might work with the right individual, but of course there's no way of telling that in advance.

My oldest whippet Jasper was never interested in bitches we even tried to mate him to a lurcher bitch who did everything other than crawl under him he just did not want to know but this time he is definitly interested and I'm not taking any chances not that he was ever aloud near her when she was in season anyway

Personally I have just made the choice to keep just bitches and the boys have been castrated. It is heaven. I dont know how I coped with all the whining, well I didnt Hattie always managed to get mated hence a certain little fawn boy now residing in Scotland and his sister in Belguim.

Nope no mixed sexes again thank you.

I can remember when this topic appeared last time, before i got Diamond, and i said that i was only gonna have dogs.

Well after getting Diamond, i have decided to have bitches, but hey i change my mind as often as the wind.

I must admit i think Rebel would react badly if i brought another dog into the house as he thinks he owns Diamond, as he often has a go at our JRT for going near her.

Greyhounds on the other hand........we have a lovely bitch who is doing really well (our first racing bitch) but its just soooo frustrating when they come into season and all you can do is bide your time (w00t) When the time comes to breed her, we will only keep the boys

I think its all up to personal choice and what takes your fancy at the time, and only you know how your other dogs will react.

Yes, I'm beginning to think personal circumstances might favour the simplest option. I have elderly parents who break things/have heart attacks all the time and guaranteed the we'd eventually have everything coinciding at the wrong time; the last thing you'd want was a logistical mistake and a litter of puppies on top of everything

I wondered about this too Elizabeth and after asking K9 members what they thought opted for another male whippet. They are getting along great.

I think its the dogs that whine and pine when there is a bitch in the house in season and some members even send their bitches to friends houses when they are in season to save on all this hassle. (w00t)

Goo Luck anyway  - Im pleased hes come round at last. Cant wait to see your new addition when you decide. :luck:

I didn't actually say HE'd come round :- " He looked like he was weakening when we went to visit the patterdale puppy and was heard to utter the words ' oooh, it's so cute  ' (shortly followed by 'Gawd 'elp them when it grows up though' :- " )

Mind you, I didn't consult him the last time, and he's besotten with the one we have.

We have Bobby (6 year old neutered Collie X) and Dolly (16 months). I thought there would be no problems when we got Dolly as Bobby had been neutered when he was a year old.

However, when Dolly had her second season a couple of months ago, she really hassled Bobby and wouldn't leave him alone - a real tart!! :* The result was that they actually mated and tied - didn't think this could happen!!! (w00t) (w00t) (w00t) So I think in the future if/when I have another dog, I will probably stick to bitches.

I think it is a personal thing though, and it depends on circumstances and lifestyle. Good luck with whatever you decide.

Strike while the Irons Hot (so to speak) ...... before he has chance to say NO - go for it NOW

:( Well, we've got that tee shirt - and for us it turned out to be very hairy indeed! The male was not inclined to ignore the bitch in heat, nor she him. I found it very wearing indeed to have mixed sexes in the same house - yet I do know of people who do, with no trouble at all. But I would never chance it again so for me, it's dogs all the way. And we tried everything, even 'chemical' castration for the dog, which was a waste of money. The old lady (because she is so old, now has her seasons stopped by the vet as she is too old for spaying). But again, it's not the best - just a compromise. :luck:

 And any day now I'll be living with a certain little fawn boy and a little fawn whippet girl (due) in season so I'll be experiencing it all for the first time. I'm planning to keep them a cage and two doors apart, garden them separately and watch them like a hawk. The bitch is not a flirty girl AT ALL but I'm taking no chances. :nuke:

Very successful as accidents go though (w00t) Let us know how little zoomie copes with it all!
