Hi all

Im new here and about to get my new pup.I wondered if anyone had any easy starter tips on getting into whippet racing if possible.

I used to have whippets as a kid and im so excited about having them around again.I'v read up a lot on the racing, and thought i might let him have a try but still dont know if its a good or bad thing in general for them ?.All views gratefully recieved :)

Hiya Lisa welcome to K9, I would suggest that when your pup has had all his vaccinations ect going along to a racing club local to you,(if you say what area you are in someone might be able let you know where that might be) the people there will give you help and advice and it will also let him/her get used to all the sounds and atmosphere of the people/traps/lure ect also its good for socialising your puppy with other dogs.

Good luck with your new puppy :luck: :luck:

Hi Lisa, welcome to K9! I agree with Lesley, best thing you could do would be to pop along to your nearest club. I'm sure there would be loads of people willing to offer advice.

Hi Lisa

Welcome to the world of whippets and - on this part - racing also :)

There are 2 Kent clubs, one (Maidstone pwrc) is in Detling village close to junction 7 of the M20 and the other one (Harvel pwrc) is in Bean, near Bluewater. They race on alternate Sundays - this Sunday (30th) is at Harvel - but the season is ending soon for both these clubs , usually mid November. If you need directions you can contact myself on 07730-527849 as secretary for Harvel or I can tell you a number for Mark Etheridge who is my counterpart at Maidstone.

Children are very welcome, just make sure that they know the safety rules - not going onto track during races etc.

As others have said already, taking your pup from the day he is allowed out can only benefit in the long term. The become accustomed to the noise and bustle etc ... and learn how to chase motorbikes :D

Whippet racing folks are very attracted to whippet puppies and don't seem to be able to stop themselves from giving puppies a big fuss. So it's a great place to take a pup out to socialise it.

Have fun when you go.
