Hi All,

I've joined the forum today as next weekend we pick up our first puppy. We are both very excited about this but are also realistic about the hard work that will also come with it.

We both work full time 40 hours a week, both do 8-5 Mon - Fri and we want to do the best by our puppy. Our puppy will be 8 weeks old when we pick him up, we have 2 weeks off to 'settle' him in and get to know him.

When we go back to work he will be nearly 10 weeks old, our plan at the moment is as follows:

6am get up and see to pup

8am leave for work

10am My mother in law will pop in to check on him and make sure he's ok....toileted etc

midday - 1pm we will be home for lunch and can check on him

3pm again my mother in law or brother in law will pop in to check on him

5pm we will be home for the evening

When we are at work, we intend to have him in a crate with a little pen space attached for toileting as the breeder has already started using the 'misty' method with the litter.

Do you think this is an acceptable arrangement?

I have booked him in for puppy socialisation classes and I am keen to work hard on training him whilst having lots of fun with him to hopefully help him grow in to confident, happy little boy (pup)

Thank you in advance for any advice you can share with me, I am hoping to become a regular forum member.

thats sounds great! What a lovely mother in law you have, and how wonderful that you have it all planned out! And two weeks off to play with him, i'm very jealous ;) ...

There are many folk on here that have loads of advice on all things dog, but i'll warn you, we demand photo's, especially of puppies! What type is it?

I've not heard of the misty method, i'm off to go google it now.

Thank you for your lovely response.

I'm very fortunate that my inlaws are very local to us, both retired and both love dogs :)

Baxter is a border terrier pup....I'll see if I can figure out how to upload a photo.

Here's my beautiful boy.

crikey, what a cute little monster, i love the eyebrows on a border terrier :)

just looked at the misty method thing, sounds great, what a difference a committed breeder can make eh?

The breeder has been lovely, absolutely brilliant I cannot fault her.

You'll probably see lots of silly questions from me over the next few weeks whilst I get to know my little boy.

I am going to come and steal that puppy - he is COMPLETELY adorable!!!!

Welcome to Dog Forum - what a well thought out new owner you are - well done! :)

Oh and there is no such thing as a silly question - ask away!!

Hello! Welcome!

What a cute little puppy!

Firstly, from my experience there are many people who would argue that people who work should not own dogs. I was recently part of a forum where the owner was obviously retired and believed that if you work (even part time) you should not be owning a dog.

I am not one of those and fortunately, it seems that a lot of users here are a little more 'relaxed' with working and owning a dog.

Personally, I think your plan is well thought out and as long as the routine is stuck too I think the pup will settle into it very quickly, so that means no sneaking home for a quick cuddle! lol

It's obvious that you have taken the time to think about the situation. :)

As i've said previously on other threads I believe that there is a dog for every situation and it's up to the owner to adjust their lifestyles to fit, which is exactly what you've done here.

Too many people just buy a pup and think about it later so congratulations on doing your homework, it is really refreshing to hear!

Enjoy your time here and ask away because none of us have all the answers but sometimes putting heads together can really help.

Looking forward to see some more pictures :)

Thanks everyone for being so kind, I believe we will stick to the routine as like you say he will hopefully settle quickly.

What a cute pup! Sounds like you have it all sorted :) I hope you will be very happy with your new addition.
