Noki is 12 weeks and he's had 2 nights with us, and he has howled and whined and not slept.......I know because we haven't slept. The first night I got up once and checked on him 1/2 way through. Last night I got up a couple of times, he's distressed, and soiled and wet the floor.

He sleeps during the day but in the living room, and not if we leave the room. At night we put him in the laundry and he howls. He does his number 2's during the night, his body clock seems out of order.

He is only fed twice a day, as per the breeders instructions, but I'm wondering if he's hungry?

He has 1/2 cup of kibble and 1/2 cup of chiken and rice per day, but he was probably eating the other pups food as well as his own.

How do we sort this out? Can we use controlled crying, should we keep him awake during the day?

Any suggestions wouold be welcome, I don't want to have an ongoing problem with him. Is it too soon to worry?

thanks

Michelle

sorry, I hit submit again by accident....how do I delete it?

Hiya,

Sorry to hear that your puppy is finding it difficult to settle into his new home :(

We've always had ours in a cage in our bedroom over night and a cage for during the day to relax in then eventually phased out the bedroom cage. I still feed my 'puppy' (who is 14 months!) in his cage and he chooses to go in there overnight himself, as well as when he wants to rest during the day o:)

Your puppy is obviously going to want to be with his family rather than on his own - can he sleep with your other whippet?

If you read the FA section I'm sure this has been covered before.

Good luck :luck:

Hi Michelle

Just a quick reply for now, sorry your little lad is giving you sleepless nights (w00t) (w00t)

But, at 12 weeks old I would still be giving him 4 meals a day, not 2 - maybe he is very hungry? I know it isn't fun when they make such a racket that no one can sleep - years ago a puppy we had (not a whippet) we brought her home at 12 weeks old and the breeder had said give her 3 meals a day - we had 2 nights of terrible screaming from her and I tried everything (leaving the radio on, etc etc) - then I increased her food and number of meals a day, and she turned into an angel!

Some of them do take longer to settle in than others, but I would definitely give your boy something else to eat, to start with.

Good luck!

aww :huggles: been ther done that and got the tea shirt lol ..blue was like that when we got him and he was only 12weeks old he howlded and cryed all night long ..in the end i was so tired i brought his bed into my bedroom and he layed down and i never heard him all night long he never even had an accidents he slept with me for a year. he now will stay down stairs without any probs :thumbsup:but i prefer it wen ther all :huggles: in bed with me :b

Hi there i agree with wilfred when ours were 12 weeks old we still gave them 4 meals a day we also kept them in a cage overnight and then phased it out till the pups were fully toilet trained and the other dogs were used to the new member of the family. I hope any advice you find on K9 is helpful. Everyone has experienced the sleepless nights ! Am sure he will seetle in time. Good luck :luck:

 Puppy nights!

I had simple solution to this-let my whippet to sleep with us.. and since she was 4 months I have troubles to wake her up in the morning.

But I also think that 2 meals per day at perhaps not sufficient. I was feeding 3-4 small meals up to 4 months, 3 meals up to 6months and 2 meals from then onwards. I prefer puppies to be on the chubbier side and become lean as they grow older.. :- )

Best of luck

M

Sorry you are having a few problems. It will get better with a little patience and kindness, it all takes time.

My pups were always fed four times a day at least and plenty of playtime to tire them out. Both mine also slept in crates ... but must admit the whining only lasted a couple of nights at the most. Try a ticking clock, nice soft toys or a low playing radio.

Or Try the crate in your bedroom to make the puppy feel safe and secure, hes just left all his littermates and mum, its a very strange time for them. :( They need sometimes be able to hear and smell you nearby, perhaps a piece of clothing even that smells of you.

and do be prepared to maybe let him out once or twice at night, at first at least, till he settles in and get up and let him out quite early too.

Im sure things will improve with a few changes. :) Plenty of love and security.
