This september I rehomed a Basset Griffon from a breeder who let us have him for free. She now has turned round saying she wants to take him to breed with her bitch we told her we wasn't happy with this and we didn't want him used as he is now our pet. There is no contract in place to say she could do this I have his passport and his Pet log registration is in process. She said she is turning up tomorrow to take him regardless. Do I have any right over this? He lives with me 24/7

Than you

Dawn

You could perhaps get advice from www.doglaw.co.uk

How dare she! Unless she has something in writing then I would think she does not have a leg to stand on.

If you are thinking of having your dog neutered (only, of course, if it is right for him) then you might like to do that. She would have to give up on the idea then.

I would tell her you are going to write to the Kennel Club and report her behaviour.

Don't be in when she's arrives and seek advice from someone with knowledge.

Thank you all for these kind responses. After a long chat with her husband I think it's now resolved. What annoys me more is they stopped showing him in Crufts because apparently his legs are too long? I'd of thought for a start that's a no no but what she's going on is that he has champion in his bloodlines. Apparently he was from a top breeder in the Netherlands but hey she happily gave him away for FREE which she threw back in my face later. He is going to be Neutered and will be going ahead with that soon. His chip is registered to her addy in Midlands and he is now in Lincs I have put in the application to register him living with me cos being a scent hound if he gets out which im sure he won't but they are escape artists it's only natural I want him brought to me. Can she stop that process?

Well done in resolving the matter.

I think the chip registration people will ask the previous owner to sign something to say that you are the rightful owner of the dog. This is to prevent people from stealing a dog and re registering it to themselves.

I know how you feel because I have a dog from a local rescue. It is not the best place and I would hate him to go back there. It worries me greatly that, should he get lost, he would end up back there. They removed him from a previous home because he escaped and had an accident. They stated their main reason for removing him was that the owners failed to seek timely veterinary advice. Of course I don't know the details. I have assumed that I could not re register him as mine without their approval. They stated when I adopted him that he would always be registered to them.

Weird I just thought it be against the law on both sides to not have him registered at our address?

You might be right. Let me know if the chip company will change the address on your dog's chip without consent of the previous owner. I think it is assumed that most people have the consent of the previous owner.

I might try to change my dog's details to see if they allow it.
