my mum is interested in a norfolk terrier which is papered kc reg, as a norfolk terrier, the problem is norfolk terriers ears should be down and this dog has pricked ears? i know the person who has the dog for sale bought the dog originally in good faith as a norfolk, the problem lies with the ears though? his ears are wrong for what he is registered as? is he then a dog with a fault or has this dog got the wrong papers and in fact a ringer? i have rang the kennel club and didnt get much sense and asked around at clubs and got a lot of head shaking and oooo noises

can anyone shed any light on what to do from here? mum is wanting to show a terrier hence the interest as she knows the dog is of an exceptional temperement and this is very important as she has her grandkids alot, it is this dog she likes for his qualities and she knows the owner too

Norfolk and Norwich, 2 different breeds

yes we know that bit it is where we go from here does this mean he has a breed fault or was he originally sold with dodgy papers?

thank you though keith

just to add for anyone interested a quick way of knowing which is which is to remember norfolks go down ( norfolk being flat) and the norwich goes up (norwich has a catherdral)

My advice would approach the owner of this dog and tell em norfolks have have drop ears, norwich pricked, if you want a Norfolk, then dont buy.

regards

keith

i think maybe he has bought a ringer with wrong papers and therefore no good fr what mum wants :(

Hi

if she is wanting to show it then look eslewere as it has a fault with its ears. If it is only to be a pet it doesnt matter what they are like and she should take it because she likes its temperament.

Is is a adult dog or a pup. If she knows the person she who has it has she seen the parents. Or even the pedigree and she can look up some of the names and see what they are

Wendy

You could try asking the breed club secretary or one of the breed note writers in our dogs or dog world, as they usually have a lot of experience.

i dont know what the breed is like now,i can only go on what it was like when i showed dogs.you couldnt get a norfolk with papers for love nor money! breeders didnt want the breed to get exploited so theyd sell you a pup if it wasnt show quality but theyd NEVER give any papers with them.and even the ones that were show quality would have the papers endorsed not to be bred from till the breeder decided to lift the endorsement(only if they thought that you had the good of the breed at heart and would only mate the bitch to a dog they had chosen)they were notorious for being very strict and not wanting the breed to become overbred and too popular.i believe at one point the waiting list for a bitch pup was years long and i mean years!they all watch the breed records supplement like a hawk and heaven help you if they think youre breeding for money!you wont ever get a stud dog and noone will sell you a pup for it to be used at stud.i believe at one time a well known pro handler went into them but was soon sent packing!theyre a very tight knit group and they have the good of the breed at heart.ive never had one but i had a friend who was in norfolks ;)

i have seen the papers , in fact they have been dropped to me tonight as the gent selling it is now concerned if he was sold a dog with false papers :( , mum does want to show but basically just to accompany me when i go to shows as a bit of fun, she isnt interested in breeding as she has 2 yorkie girls whom are speyed and a neutered ex racer greyhound, this was another option , showing the grey but as he comes from a rehoming center she wouldnt have paperwork to prove ownership via kc. im considering calling the breeder on the ped here and asking some questions but how far would i get? i hardly think i will get honest answers with someone prepared to rig papers :(

Hi,

We have fox terriers and sometimes when they are puppies there ears fly before they drop this may be the case with your norfolk, ive never had norfolks but there ear carridge is very similar to the fox terrier. You can munipulate the ears to drop using various techniques but they usually correct them selves but thats in our breed you would be best to phone a breed secretary. I dont think they could get there hands on false papers i think the kennel club are usually quite good at preventing this. Hope this helps,

best of luck with your new puppy :luck:

p.s they usually fly when they are teething. :)

sorry he is almost 6 yrs old, hence the not seroius bit about showing just wanting to have a go?

if hes 6 then hes past the stage of teething! :- " also false papers is a thriving industry!go to any puppy store and youll see dogs advertised as yorkies that at 8 weeks old are bigger than an adult fox terrier and youll see what i mean. the kennel club cant ovesee any dogs parentage and breeding.they take it on trust that the breeder says the parents of a litter are the ones that are registrered on the documents.but it doesnt always follow. caveat emptor!(let the buyer beware!)

i think the dna thing of the kc is a good idea in situations like this, and also if you were accused of your dog mating a bitch you could prove one way or the other

true, but how many folk would be bothered going to all the time, trouble and expense of that?yes a person who is showing might but i doubt a pet buyer would and at the end of the day most pups sold through these kinds of outlets are going as pet companions ;)

have you a picture of him ?i recently went over a norfolk and a norwich at a show and there very different shapes apart from the ears ,lol sounds like the boy missed out on the copydex as a pup !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

i had a norfolk. Cracking little bitch (no papers).

My mum is on several waiting lists for a good bitch. Not many breeders will sell bitches  they want to keep the breed rare.... and expensive (they can easily make £1200 now!)

If you want to show i get one i knew was from goodlines n genuine.

Good luck :luck:

hey tanya i think you and your mum and dad are turning into bloody puppy farmers  you got more pedigree dogs than crufts had a few weeks ago (w00t) (w00t)

j ;) hn

When you get the papers why not call the breeders and ask them to explain?
