We often run our lot on the village green in the next village. It's a brilliant, huge space, gated and well away from traffic :D But ... there used to be a football pitch on part of it and so there were goal posts ... until this winter when one post and the attached crossbar fell down ... unfortunately the post hole, hidden by the grass, remains. Luckily if you know the hole is there you can avoid that area of the green as it really is a huge space ... but it is an accident waiting to happen and I've taken to warning anyone I see running a dog - so no one much lol as we usually have the space to ourselves - that the hole's there. But what I really want to do is make it safe before one of mine runs that way when I'm not looking and breaks a leg

The village is an estate village owned by a local Duke but the local authority are also involved in the areas upkeep so it can be hard to work out who is responsible for what. And that includes finding someone to sort out said hole. Does anyone know where I stand legally if, rather than wait for the powers that be to sort themselves out, I just take a bag of sand with me one day and fill it in myself?

Safe bit :)

I don't see what harm it would do if you filled the hole up with sand, just think if a dog or even a child hurt themselves going down the hole, i would go and fill it up and if any ones stops you and asks why your doing it, just tell them that your making it safe for children and dogs that use the green, if the want to put a new post in sand will come out easily

the feald we use has removabel goal post now it was much beter when they were perminet and there 4 pittches so at the end of teh season I go with platice drinks bottles and ram them in the hole upside down. they fit well and are enghe to stop a leg going down the hole. if they dont like it tuff they should have some sort of cap. if the poast arnt going back up i would fill them with sand aswell

We've had the same problem in our local park. there used to be about ten football pitches on the bottom meadows but they are not used any more...which is great as it means lots less litter...mucky sods  The grass around the posts never got mowed so the dogs couldn't see the bottom of the posts so we had to try to avoid them all as there were a few very hairy moments when they only just missed hitting them when charging around :sweating:

A couple of the posts have really rusted away & one just fell apart a few weeks ago. We reported it & took photos & amazingly the local council did remove it pretty quickly. We went along the next day prepared to fill in the holes...there are loads of very handy molehills nearby  ...but again, amazingly the council had filled them up with sods of earth/grass.

the plastic bottle idea is good Wendy. Unless you have a Hebe who loves them & would probably pinch it out of the hole.

I can't see what harm there would be in filling the hole with a piece of turf or something, if they want to take it out & put something else in it would be easy enough. Much better than a broken leg or worse

I'd go with the bag of sand option if it was me. Don't worry we won't tell anyone it was you! ;) :D

Shove some rocks in the hole first, then you won't need to use so much sand :D

Or if there are any mole heaps around, they make a great filler
