Hi everyone!

I know at the moment there are much more problems than puppies is quarantine but because is a pet forum i like to know how you manage the situation?
It is understandable that we cannot socialize with other people and dogs at the moment but the decision to cancel all vaccinations for quarantine period sounds cruel. What if it will last for few months ?!
I'm just really horrified about my 10 weeks puppy witch won't leave home till 4-5 months. No other people, no other environment. Just him and me for 24 hours every day.
Did you have any information about canceling vaccines or any idea how to make that period easier for my little one ?!

There's some information on the Kennel Club website: Breeders and coronavirus (Covid-19) FAQs

However, there's quite a lot of socialisation you can do: you're allowed out once a day so carry your pup and find somewhere to sit to watch the world go by: this can work quite well as you shouldn't have people coming right up to you and overwhelming your pup, so he can learn that people, cars, etc., aren't scary - give him a treat whenever he spots a person with a beard, a person with a stick, a man, a woman, a child, a car, a bus....

Also, keep an eye out for any spots where dogs just aren't going at the moment. It may be that it would be safe to let your pup go on the ground and have a little potter sniffing around. Depending on the prevalence of some diseases in your area, some vets advise that it's better to take the small risk of doing this to help with socialisation, so I'd ask yur vet via email or phone.

Thank you very much! My vet adviced to walk just in our own garden and unfortunately we have a flat and our small “back garden” is walked by a lot of cats, maybe even foxes, we are not sure about but they are popular in our area. Are they dangerous for a puppy?

Please don’t judge us for keeping a dog in apartment, we just waiting to move in few months to our forever home with garden. We absolutely didn’t expected a quarantine and a locked in house puppy:(

The main risk to puppies is from unvaccinated dogs and rats.

Use the garden for toilet training, but importantly take your puppy outside, tucked into your jacket. He will be safe as long as he isn't on the ground. And in some places, on the ground is fine - as Judy says. If you are near a coast, the shoreline as the tide is going out is washed clean, for example.

It's actually quite a good time to socialise a puppy, not ideal but not too bad. This is because a lot of people over expose puppies and the dog can get quite overwhelmed. That is far less likely in the current environment.

Socialisation is not about everyone and every dog meeting a pup. Think quality, not quantity, exposure, not interaction.

There is quite a good checklist here - it wouldn't be practical, or necessary to get everything on the list but it's a good guideline and illustrates that socialisation is about more than just having a run around with other dogs. The Puppy Socialization Exposure Checklist - Whole Dog Journal
