great!! nothing like a bit of competition is there :- "

Talking of numbers dont you think its time we had a few more classes at some of these shows? We seem to have the same classes year after year even though our entries are going up & up.

Yes but if you win a class of thirty or even get placed it is a brilliant win and feeling. Also it is not affecting to amount of whippets going to Crufts and getting stud book numbers so personally I think keep it the same!

We are happy to look at suggestions from exhibitors relating to anything at all.

Sometimes it is good that people voice opinions otherwise the committee will think you are all happy with what we are doing.

Please suggest the classes you think will attract entries to it and I personally will bring them up at the next committee meeting to be considered for next years shows.

It is just that when I went to my first champ show 30yrs ago we seemed to have the same classes as now. I remember the total entry was 160 whips and Lady Anderson was the judge.

However our entrys have gone up but the no of classes has stayed more or less the same.

I dont think it would radically alter the class sizes if we had say a mid limit class at some of the general champ shows.

It would be interesting to know the reason why we show in the classes we select.

OK I know we enjoy it and the dogs do too (contrary to some folks belief). But why do we enter classes other than the age classes (at Ch shows)?

Maiden is for a dog not having won a first prize at an Open or Ch show, this can be mainly populated by Puppies or Juniors probably after points for JW. Similarly for Novice.

Graduate is for the more mature dog which has (possibly) won its way out of Novice but the owner does not consider it is suitable yet for PG. BUT as Graduate does not qualify it could be seen as a way to get into the Final Line-up and a chance for a CC or RCC.

PG qualifies (if you are in the first three) so is popular for dogs out of Yearling but still wanting to qualify and not thought ready for Limit / Open.

Mid-Limit is similar to Graduate in that it can be seen as an option to 'get your dog noticed' which may not happen so much in a large class, unfortunately on occasion a lot of folk think this and Mid-Limit is full whereas Limit may be less so.

Open is 'Open to ALL' so gets a lot of quality dogs there -- some can be straight out of Junior and are fully mature but have not won their way through Grad / PG / Mid-Limit / Limit however the owner thinks the dog is good enough for Open.

So why do we enter classes like Blue / Black / Racing / veteran etc?

For the fun of competition and (possibly) the hope we will be in the final line-up for the CC, although it is unusual for a CC to go to a dog out of these classes.

IMHO the addition of more classes would serve little purpose - possibly more dogs would get bits of cardboard and into the line-up but the major interest would still be in the 'qualifying' classes and particularly PG / Limit / Open.

I select mine like this - I phone Cathie or Jan, and ask in a really pathetic voice 'what class should I enter?'

they tell me, I do it

but seriously Dawn, thanks for that run down of classes cos I'm so novice that I struggle to understand what they all mean :)

So far Monty has been in one minor puppy class....gee that was a toughie for me.

Well its like this up to two years you have age related classes, then you have all the rest of the entry in the usually three classes [Pg Limit & open ]that are left.

Sometimes there is a Veteran class but I know people who are unwilling to pay full price to go in it because they feel the dog will not get the ticket.

When you travel long distances to show I feel it would be nice to have the chance of winnig a card especially as the quality in Whippets is very high.

I dont feel that having say one more class would make the quality of the entry drop. I also think for breeds like our the classes should all qualify.

Hi there

So I think you are saying it would be nice to have more qualifying classes, if that is so, then that is down to the KC who deem what is a Qualifying class or not.

If however you mean you would like more classes (non qualifying) you can give us your suggestions, but this generally will not alter the total entry to the show, as what generally will happen is the same entry (exhibitor) might just enter more classes with especially there younger dogs.

In other words, with exception of classes such as special beginners, which is not wholly based on the dogs wins but that of the exhibitor, I can only think of the colour classes which are usually put on at Open shows, because at the Championship shows we would not have enough time for these classes. (IMO).

The NWA put on 11 classes per sex and we open judging at 10am with bitches(because generally it is a larger entry than dogs), and generally do not finish until 4.30pm. Taking in to consideration that most exhibitors travel a considerable distance to shows, we feel that is a late enough finish. I can remember when we ony had one ring (in the days when our show was at Brunel University) when we did not get away until 7.30pm, having started

judging at 10am.(Committee arrival time 7.45am).

Please give us some class suggestions for classes you think of, I am sure all Clubs will look at these suggestions.

Hi Clardia,

I was mainly thinking of the general champ shows as breed shows tend to put on more classes anyway but I will put on my thinking cap ! o:)
