I've just found another nice walk that's safe for the dogs, my only concern is that there are a few houses surrounding the fields, so I'm thinking that the chances are we'll see a cat one morning.

Leia chases crows, squirrels and rabbits so would she know the difference between those and a cat?

Would you trust your dogs with cats if they were free running, especially in a pack?

I'm worried about this, and I think that I'll muzzle her just incase.

Hi Rae, i wouldnt trust my dogs with a cat if they where on a lead, (w00t) they really do detest them and with having lots of farm cats at the back of us, they go mental if there inside and one goes past the back fence.

Not really, I probably would trust Tess as she has had several lessons from cats having chased them up telegraph poles, but I certainly wouldn't trust them in a pack.

NO WAY (w00t) mine are ok with my own cat but they still chase her outside she jumps on the fence to high for them when outside I dont think they would hurt her though.

I think if they saw a cat out whilst free running they would see it as a furry not necessarily as a cat and I think they would definatley get it :(

Should have said though unless there was nothing around I think a cat would find a safe haven from a dog because they can get to places out of reach

Don't think I'd trust them either. They're ok with our cats in the house, but even if they see our cats outside in the garden etc, they will give chase. If we're out for a walk and they're on the lead, and they see a cat, then they start baying like mad dogs!!!!

NO WAY!!! (w00t)

(w00t) No way, I remember the dogs working a hedge on a farm that I have permission to go rabbiting on. They put a large tom cat out of the hedge , luckily the cat got up a tree , but it could have been nasty . I think whippets have an inbuilt hatred for cats when they are out of the house (w00t)

never mind trusting ur dog with cats,,,

wot about not trusting a cat with ur dogs,,lol lol

NO!!!!!!! ....or squirrels or rabbits or birds or.... :sweating:

Even though I have 3 cats of my own, still wouldnt TRUST them at all if they were off the leader and saw a stranger cat. (w00t) they still chase mine up te garden given the chance - and have had several warnings (w00t) from them.

Right, that's made me feel better, (sort of) so I dont have a 'devil dog' they are all the same

I think I will muzzle her just incase, to be on the safe side.

I do trust my Callista. I am not so sure about Genevieve, but she does follow Callista, so there is a good chance she would come back too. The thing is that the cat would see you coming and most likely just slink away (if there is a long grass) long before the dogs spot her, or go up a tree (if there are trees). We live in suburb and to think about it, i do not think we ever came across a cat on our walks (although there is lot of them), and we have not seen one in our park either, even that is surounded by houses.

I'd agree. Ours loves cats, is very submissive to our own, and even if he meets one he doesn't know face to face he still grovels and wags his tail at is as if it were a puppy BUT if he sees one moving fast in an open space he will treat it like a rabbit, unless it stopped and turned to face him. On balance I wouldn't take any risks, even with a dog that is fairly cat-safe in other situations.

Someone who used to live in the village had a 2 lurchers and a house full of siamese with whom her dogs were entirely ok, it still didn't prevent them from chasing a Birman cat on the Meadow and half-killing it; the police were involved, she was prosecuted and moved away from the village afterwards. :(

Cats stalk along our garden wall especially to tease my boys so NO I wouldn't trust them.

mine dont bother at all not with mine or the ones that live around here, even if they see one as they are getting out of the car they still dont bother but i think if the cat run they would chase it after all thats what they do! i also like to think that if it stoped they would just stop too but you just never know!

i'd trust amber as she, when meeting my brother in laws new cat for the first time, tried going all goofy and broody  she was heart broken when schiz (ophrenic) wouldnt have any of it :teehee: bless her, all she wanted was to snuggle and wash her, but the torti terror decided 'no chance' and then spent the rest of our stay 'guarding' amber...wherever amber went, there she was, right in front of her, meowing with the occasional hiss (which made amber whimper every time (w00t) )

dante on the other hand, no way! he might not be a whippet, but when it comes to things like birds, squirrels etc, hes gotta chase :huggles:

Mine aren't really into chasing rabbits (rubbish whippets!! ) but there's still no way that i'd trust them with someone's pet cat.
