My 13 year old dog is restless at night. He whines and barks on and off throughout the night but sleeps happily all day. I have tried letting him sleep in my room but he still kept whining. I walk him at night and have just started to give him benedryl but he's still the same. I would be grateful for any advise please

He may have something which I think is called Canine Cognitive Disorder - a sort of doggy dementia. In humans, this sort of behaviour is common with some forms of dementia. Your vet might be able to prescribe something.

You could also try a diffuser with lavender oil which aids sleep.

I agree with JoanneF. Well worth a visit to the vet as there is a lot they can do now. I know, in cats, this behaviour can also be a sign of high blood pressure.

I would always recommend Aktivait for the older dog. My mum has a dog who behaves like this sometimes. It sleeps in the kitchen with other dogs so it's not from lack of company. I have used a dap diffuser with success and we also leave a dimmed light on for them. In would also recommend finding out about Skullcap and Valerian tablets from Dorwest and also their Valerian tincture which I find excellent. We sometimes leave the radio on too (classic fm not planet rock).

Thankyou everyone. All very helpfull. I will try it all and let you no how i get on

My dog suffered a stroke a week ago, and watching him at times I think he's got dementia, he's not 100%. But ok at moment,
