Hi all,

from time to time when browsing UK show critiques I come across a dog described as an 'old fashioned type' or an 'old fashioned dog', not having seen the dogs in the flesh, I wonder what one would look like? or does this term mean different things to different judges?

TIA!

i used to own a bitch called blondies pride judges alwayed described her as old fashioned as she was small and fine and had more of a ach over her loin

Iv been told my Tara is more the old fashion type. Not so much to look at but the lines she is off of. Id say she looks pretty much like todays whippet. (see signature)

I have also been told my bitch is olf fashioned type as well and very "english". She is a smaller and finer type. Some judges like it and some dont but she is the correct height.

This photo was taken before 1977. The judge is Arthur Westlake. from left to right. Jane Lonsdale-Hartley, Daphne Raines, Mrs Chapman and yours truly. I suppose they could all be classed as english whippets. I know they are all not standing very well.

You would not want them to look like that these days.would you. Looking at these straight upper arms are not a modern thing.

I love looking at these old photos! :D Thanks for posting it!

Rachel, can you get your hands on any of the Whippet Champions books eg the 1960 - 1986 one? You will see some old fashioned whippets in there - and mind you, it should not be always assumed that this is a derogatory term, although quite often it is used that way. But there are some of those "old fashioned" whippets that I wish I could have now. ;)

I did point out they were not standing properly, I don't think you could say my blue had a straight upper arm!!!!!!!!! All four of them had won BOBs and hound groups.

All were the correct size too.

I would normally use the term 'classic whippet' instead of 'old fashioned whippet', and like you Lana, I don't see anything wrong with a classic type of whippet

I was going to suggest this but somehow forgot to post.

I love that picture. I agree so much with Lana and Doris, there are lots of whippets from times past I would love to own now. I like the trousers Bertha, you were ever so trendy.

I thought Arthur had taken his glasses off because he was dazzled by the sun, he was bedazzled by your shirt Bertha. Ten Brownie points for the famous whippet I have just mentioned. ;)
