Hoping some of the K9ers who have been around lurchers a long time can give me some advice on this. My saluki x is about ten now and was my first lurcher. She has been through a few homes, but has been with me six years now and will be staying for the rest of her days. She has had some mammary lumps removed, but is more or less physically ok, feet are a bit tired, but not too bad.

In her younger days, unsurprisingly she was at her best on hares (pre ban) and ok lamping rabbits. I reckon this type of work would be too much now because she gets tired so much quicker now, a couple of runs on the lamp would be ok though.

On today' s lunchbreak mooch, I noticed her pulling up a metre or so before the hedge, rather than in it, which is a change.

What are peoples' experiences of when their dogs have reached this stage and what sort of work do they do? I would really like her to do some ferreting, but cannot really keep ferrets myself because of where I live, and couldn't cope with a second dog for the same reason.

hi c.m sadly my old hunting dog never made it to 10,he only got to 8 then had a stroke, but after around 6 he changed in his approach to working,he too would not crash the hedge and missed some that a couple of years before would have been in the bag, just down to getting older and wiser i think,as he knew that hitting the hedge hurt,if she is still game to have the odd run let her she will let you know when she`s had enough. :luck: mate
