I race my lurchers and some shows only have trophies for showing and not for racing and as my dogs are better than racing I sometimes feel hard done by when we win the racing and only get a little rosette compared with huge rosette and trophy won by the show winner.

When we do get a trpohy it is the best feeling in the world, and even though the shelves are getting a little cluttered each one is very special to me.

 :p Seems like a trophy/rosette/medal IS important. Stuff saving £2-£3 on an entry. WE WANT PRIZES (actually, some of us might not get any  )but if we did win WE WOULD WANT A PRIZE

any one that wants a trophy should tick a box on the entry form and pay £2 or £3 pound more that should be fare to every one . and the ones that dont want a trophy should get it for £2.50 per dog

A problem that I see with this is that the trophies are ordered and paid for much earlier than the closing dates.

Would you attend an Open and run your dogs if there were NO TROPHIES.The entry fee could be less that half the present level.

What do owners do with all their Open Trophies?

We can't give prize money but we could reduce the entry to say £2.00.

Why dont you do a vote??? just to see

Thought about this again for a few days and still think that a reduction in entry costs and a certificate would be best. A friend recently showed me an album for (don't laugh) their prize bantums - was really nice, the certificates were good quality card written in gold and silver and she had put pictures in with the certificates. A lovely momento and I thought how nice it would be if I had something similar for my boys.

You could still give medals for heat wins and blankets/collars/leads etc with the certficates to add to the prize if needed.

With majorly rising petrol costs + entry costs rising too it would be a nice saving for owners - particularly those running a number of dogs.

Are you implying poultry folk are sad (w00t) (yes, we probably are! )

I used to regularly win cups at horticultural shows, the sort you keep for a year, have engraved and then hand back. Nice as it was to have them, I was always quite glad to hand them back and getting them engraved was very expensive. Have only won rosettes for doggy things, they are displayed with pride though and still take up less space than those blessed cups :D

[/b]WHY CHANGE THE WAY THINGS HAVE BEEN FOR YEARS? A REDUCTION IN ENTRY FEES IS DEBATABLE FROM CLUB TO CLUB.TROPHIES MEAN MORE TO PEOPLE CENTEMENTLY AND ARE A REMINDER WHEN ON SHOW AT HOME.PEOPLE WHO SAY THEY HAVE TOO MANY TROPHIES MUST HAVE HEADS BIGGER THAN THE COMPUTER SCREEN.

It's not that our heads are too big - but our houses are too small

why not have 1 trophy , winners of classes have a photo taken at the end of the day with the said trophy the picture is the mounted and framed, job done (decent pics taken on a rostrum etc) winners happy no silverware to clutter house and a lasting reminder hanging on their wall, i showed hard feather game for many years and won 100s of rossettes and several trophys but what i treasure are the pictures

Opens HAVE to give prizes away .......ALL dogs regardless of their ability/speed have that day you will ALWAYS remember ......and a rosette/trophy or nice card will remind you of that day forever  ......I personally think a nice rosette is wonderful even though i've boxes and bags of them put away safe :b ........but I also display the most nastyiest piece of red and gold plastic you've ever seen (from a Glos club race (and they never wanted it back (w00t) ))) lol .....because The Twit ran sooo well to win it  :b .....long live the trophy

I agree we should keep trophies but when people say they have too many trophies it has nothing to do with their ego, they mean they literally just don't have enough room to display them. They end up going into boxes or given away to clubs.

Majority of clubs only have 1 open a year. Some people travel a far way accross the country for the love of whippet racing,a trophy is more appealling to newcomers, segregate it small standard silver trophies for constalation final,Gold trophies for main finalists.

I think a blanket for reaching a final is useful but abit disheartening,Especially when you see the same blanket in the pound shop for £1.Entry fees are debatable,Cornwall is along drive for some so a steep entry fee may put people off. Thank you

I agree 100% about seeing the prize for say £1 in the £ shop, but unfortunatly the price of trophies are ever rising and clubs are going to get to the point that they have to make a choice betweeen 1, no trophie and cheaper entry, 2, items as you mentioned above, or 3, raising entry fees still further to cover their cost.

Cornwall is along drive for some so a steep entry fee may put people off
we make it into a holiday as well so that off sets the expense of traveling down (about 8 hours for us with the caravan on) looking forward to a few weeks away.

if your at the opens come and say hello

we love any prizes because that is the reward for getting to the final and it is a achievement to even get to the final anyway, so each trophy, blanket, rosette etc we get is treasured, plus i've given up smoking and the money i used for cigarettes now pays for my entry fees and i paid alot more to show my dogs than to race them

I think when you first start out trophys are great but after being in the sport for 15 years they all have ended up in 2 big boxes under the bed, whatever the dogs win this year are on show then they go up in the box at xmas time and we start all over again the year after, i would rather have cheaper entry fees but i do have 4/5 dogs running so it does work out a bit expensive.
we think the same as you paula to many trophys allready and only been in the racing game four years

we have been racing for over 25 years now and we still cherish the trophies and rosettes that our dogs have won. i write on everyone so that we know which dog has won it and when we look back at them we can talk about the dogs they have raced against and where they are now. at one time we were racing 8 dogs at a meeting but we managed with the entry fees and always loved to have a trophy at the end after all it did take us 20 years to get a racing champion
