Hi all I'm new to this site, we got our 8 week old lhasa, Oscar yesterday.

Oscar's first night

Well Oscar first day went amazing, first time outside and in the car and to the vets and he took it all in his stride. Along with coming into a completely new environment.

I took him out at 10.50 then into crate for bedtime. He cried and whined for about 5 mins then settled down for the night. First time he woke was:

1:50am and no whining just rest fullness so I took him out, no playing or anything and he pee'd then straight in.

2nd time he woke and out for pee: 2:50am, out and pee'd straight away. (Some whining before hand but I made sure he had stopped before I took him out)

2:55am: some whining and waited for it to stop and out for a pee and straight back in.

5.20am: some whining and waited for him to stop and out for a pee.

Up at 6.40am out for pee and first meal of the day. It's now 8am and he's done a few pees and two poops. Phase a good play and now he is in his crate resting.

Do you think that he is wakening up too much during the night or is that because it's his first night in a new home. I'm unsure if maybe I should only take him out twice or maybe 3 times during the night and maybe the other time let him whine for a min and he will settle down. Every time I brought him back in during the night he whined for a minute then settled.

Any advice would be great, he is doing amazingly so far. Very proud

Hi I think what you are doing is fine as at 8 weeks old puppies cannot hold themselves for very long & need to toilet constantly.

Personally I always invest in a much larger crate where I can put a bed one end & newspaper the other with maybe a water bowl & enough space for the pup to be able to get up & move around & space for it to relieve itself if it needs to. Most pups will not be able to hold themselves right through the night until they are at least 6 months or more.

Also if you plan to go out shopping etc & leave the pup locked in such a small crate & its not fair to expect it to hold itself for longer than an hour or so at this age, so a larger crate with newspaper is again a good idea.

Obviously if the pup will never be left alone & you are happy getting up several times a night then what you are doing is absolutely fine. :))

Hope this helps.

He will be eventually left alone during the day but not for a huge amount of time. He does do a lot of crying when he is in his crate though. When he is sleepy and lies down in the Livingroom and we lift him into his crate and shut the door and we are able to go upstairs and he is fine on his own, it's when he is not as sleepy and even when he can see us sometimes he will whine and cry. Someone is sleeping near him right now but we will soon be leaving him and getting a baby monitor to get him used to sleeping alone so I don't know how that will go and we will get up a few times to let him out. The last few nights he has went the majority of the night without needing to get up and pee just wee crys.

But worried he will just cry all the time when he is in his crate alone.
