Hi everyone
Haven't posted for a wee while I am glad everyone is OK. To anyone in Australia I hope you are coping with the fires and the heat.
In Auckland, NZ today we had 29 degrees and our humidity was ridiculous - poor Otis is flaked out on an inflatable camp bed we no longer use - it is nylon and nice and cool.
He was mugged by a - I wish I could say giant aggressive pit bull or something - but no it was a Foxie! He had very sharp claws and has gouged a hole in Otis' side and it was a trip to the vet to get staples put in - he gets them out next week - I will try and post a pic - apparently the vet said stapling it would be better than stitching. He has been an excellent patient and hasn't tried to pull the staples out of his side which has been great as I was dreading having to put a collar on him :- (
BUT - my main reason for posting is again the old thorn about skinny whippets. Otis has been looking a little light - he is seven months now and has been a finicky eater and hard to find something he wolfs down. He has Tripe and Advance (a vet jellimeat) mushed together and for breakfast - if he decides to eat them dry food. I found a recipe which I thought I would post - it has probably been on here a million times - but for newbies like me who may not have seen it here it goes:
5 pounds ground beef
5 cups Total whole grain cereal (or similar)
5 cups oatmeal
2½ cups wheat germ
¾ cup olive oil
¾ cup unsulfured molasses
6 eggs
5 packets gelatin
pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients together thoroughly like you would a meatloaf.
Roll into balls about 1-2 inch diameter.
Freeze. Thaw as needed for feeding.
I added some Royal Canin in instead of the cereal and some goats milk I had kicking around too - I have now got a freezer of little balls - which were a HIT!! Hopefully in this hot weather they will help cool him down too as I will give them to him slightly thawed. Apparently you can cook them up and serve them warm too - but I figure just making them is enough without cooking them as well! :- )
