We kissed Ella goodbye earlier today.
She had started "skipping" 6 weeks ago and her trademark curly tail started to drop to the side, which eventually turned into a limp, i put this down to Sciatica which she was treated for years ago, our vet Paul said it was a disk problem and she was prescribed drugs which initally seemed to knock it on the head, however over the last two weeks she'd gone lame again, had sever muscle wastage and become incontinent and yesterday fully lost the use of her back legs, whilst still being very alert, telling the other dogs off, barking and having her usual appetite. We knew we had to do the right thing and today that was confirmed by the vet who told us recovery wasn't looking good. Still it doesn't make the decision any easier, she'd have been 11 in November so i feel very cheated, imagining her living to a ripe old age - she'd been running around like a pup leading up to this and was always the boss over our younger dogs.
Ella will always be remembered by everyone who knew her, her curly tail and funny ways, you couldn't help but love her. She was a quirky dog and would either take an instant like or dislike to other dogs, she hated Cara with a passion and tolerated the others but she always brought our pups on, teaching them all her antics and putting them in their place. She had 2 litters, one to Gillette and the other to Midnight Run and had a special soft spot for her babies Dobber & Violet, who carry so many of her traits, she also loved Tony, her breeder, never forgetting he fed her for the first 6 weeks. She was the most loyal, devoted dog (until someone else had food or a duvet she could sneak under lol) she was my baby, got away with murder and always slept in bed with us and despite being one of 18 dogs will leave a massive void in our lives.
RIP my Elzibobs - the bestest hot water bottle!
