Well Rebel has been in his first show, but didnt get placed, not that im really surprised.

He was first up in the Whippet Open against 5 other whippies (all a lot older!).

He stood beautifully in the line after a little gentle persuasion, i was really proud as the judge walked up and down. As it was my first show, i stood at the back and watched the others. By the time it was his turn on the table he was fed up, he started playing up.The judge was great though and asked if he would prefer it on the floor, so i put him on the floor but he still wouldnt stand. He then asked me to walk up and down the mat to calm him down, tried again, but he wasnt having any of it. The judge smiled and asked us to walk the mat again. We lined up with the others, with the judge coming back to give Rebel a good glance over, but he wasnt picked. The judge came over though, shook my hand and told me to persevere as he liked the look of Rebel, and had he not played up he would have been highly placed. That was a a great boost!

Rebel was then in the AV puppy class and OH took him in that as Rebel seemed to be pining for him. There were 6 dogs in it, but he was the only Whippet. He also stood at the back and by the time it was his turn, Rebel was fed up. The judge spent a long time with him and was very pleased with him but he was still playing up.

We have found that next time we will try to be at the front so Rebel doesnt get fed up.With all the positive comments we had today i'll just have to up the training sessions with him, in time he will settle and do us proud.

well done to you all  experience will come with time for you and Rebel.

must admit don't think i would have the guts to show 'for real' so to say, it was bad enough with a fun day dog show for me!

Was there only 1 class for whippets Denise ? Sounds as though Rebel needs a bit more training , but that will benifit both of you :- " , Well done for sticking at it though , and it sounds as if you had 2 really helpful judges who appreciated the fact that he was new to the `game `. Who where they ? . I hope youve already planned to enter another show :p

That just what I was wondering Jax. If Rebel was in AV puppy that must mean he is a puppy and to be competing in the Open class is asking an awful lot of a puppy.

Well done and keep at it, try getting to some shows that have puppy classes on for whippets that way he wont have to compete with the older dogs for a placing.

sounds to me like you got a lot of positive feedback. :) keep at it,stay calm dont worry hes a baby and it will come with time and experience.

Sounds like you got some really good comments!

Some of the best advice I was given when I started was not to be first or last, but try to be around 3rd (depending on the size of the class) - that way you can watch what the others are doing, but the dog is still early enough to not be bored by the time it's his turn on the table.

I don't mind being first any more, and quite often am by choice so I can set the pace - I hate getting caught behind someone going really slow and having everyone bunch up. But I've started to go 2nd or 3rd now if I can with Teya as she's still young and I've found pays better attention if there's at least one dog in front of her. When I've had her first she wants to see what's going on behind.

Good luck with your boy.

Yes, there was only one class for Whippets (Open) and when i spoke to the secretary she said that it might be worth entering as there are only a couple of others entered.

I thought twice when i got the Catalogue and saw there were a few, but after practising on the mat and on the table before the show started one of the stewards said dont bother withdrawing and give it a whirl.

All i can say is that im glad i tried and his next show is in 2 weeks time.

Now i've got to spend the next 2 weeks training him more and if i try not to get there too early and try and be the first or second in line he might do better next time.

Denise

P.S the judges were Mr Morland and Mrs Dufty (Triken)

Well now I know why you had such good advice and kind words , Pat and Ray are Whippet people that ive known for years :huggles: and would be giving you every chance with Rebel . You couldnt have had to better judges to give you advice ( apart from myself and Dawn , that is ;) o:) )

Who are your judges next time ?

 Well done to you and Rebel! It can be very daunting in that ring when it's all quite new! And well done to the judges too - an understanding judge is the most wonderful thing a new pup can meet. And it was good for Rebel to go in more than one class too - I'm going to be facing this with mad-wee-Zoomie too and hope to have as good a judge. Although i have been showing for a while it's a new breed and new group for me (w00t) so quite excited!

He's a baby - the training will come :luck: :luck: And there's SKC Champ show in May........

Well done for persevering, patience is a virtue with whippet puppies. Practise making it fun for your pup and eventually you will succeed. I started showing two pups I bred at 6 months old, the bitch after 2 shows was like she'd been doing it all her life - the dog, I gave up with and hadn't showed him for 7 months until yesterday, when he ended up being Reserve Best of Breed! He stood, moved when asked and even looked like he enjoyed himself! I had nor done any training with him, just treated him like my other spoilt pets! I'm no expert so don't take this as what you should do, it just proves that patience is required! Hope you don't have to wait as long as I did with Bertie, Yvette Good luck for the future

Rebels next 2 shows are at Barrow DKA, in AV Hound puppy, the judge is Alan Norcross. Then Newton Aycliffe DCA, in Whippet puppy and the judge is MR G Kostoppoulos. That takes me to the end of March, not sure if i should bother with the HoundShow at Kelso in April.

My daughter Lauryn has informed me that she definately wants to start Junior Handling, she is 8 next month and seems confident. The only problem is, there is a couple at ringcraft, who seem to go to the same shows as us, and have said that Lauryn can use one of their dogs at ringcraft and then onto shows which is lovely and i thought really kind.

The only problem is they are German Spitz' and not Whippets and she wants one!!!

Nah its not a problem, as soon has Rebel has settled, she can have him and i will more than likely have another Whippie pup to deal with!

Denise

well done with you'r efforts Denise ,It sounds like Rebel was enjoying himself anyway  I have the same problem with Sharma ;the attention span of a fly :

Sounds like another convert to me!!!

Well done Denise, sounds like you had fun along the way

Just thought i'd ad, that today he has been to his second show, Barrow Open.

His first class, he misbehaved again, but didnt like the judge, Sandy Platt and got a reserve.

He then went into AV Hound Puppy and he was great, against 2 dashunds and an Afghan, i was amazed by how calmer he was and he got a Second under Alan Norcross.

He is a very good Mothers Day Boy! :huggles:

Great news Denise :)) Did you get a rosette to go on the wall ?

I did yeah, its next to my Mothers Day cards! Im so proud of my little Whippie :D

Nice one Dee  knew Rebel could do it...behave himself that is!!! :D
