Someone please tell me that whippets do calm down eventually! Mathew is being a huge pain in the bum at the mo, chasing his kitty friends and holding them down, attempting the wall of death round the living room and being so excited to see visitors that he practically climbs up them! He also gets too playful with the teeny pooches. I know Hannah is shaped like a Loofah dog but that is no excuse for grabbing her neck and flinging her into the air!!

To be fair he is very good with the 'drop it' and 'leave it' commands but then goes careening into the next lot of mischief! He is 6months at the mo.

Im sooo hoping its a phase, he wont get a whippet friend to play with for another couple of years at least..

Sounds like my Hephzibah; I am worried that our cat Coco will get sick of being pounced on and may decide to find herself new home. Hephzibah is 9 months. But from previous experience i know that they do calm down, eventually :)

When exactly? Mine are 9 months-ish and still a bit mental - actually that's unfair, Huey is okay (on his own) Marlo is mental (on his own) and together they are TROUBLE!!!

Yes, they do calm down. Thank heavens!!!!! :D Grace was a nightmare at that age and my friends were all for me giving her back! The turning point was probably when she had her first season at 15 months, after that she was noticeably calmer and more mature. Now I wouldn't be without her, ever.

I sometimes feel like sending Toddy back too.

Today, it was a biro again. What is it about black that is so attractive. Perhaps he likes the Meths that I have to remove it with! :p

I sometimes think I should send my husband back instead. He is the guilty party that always leaves the pen and post-it notes on the coffee table at eye level then sneeks off to work so that he does not have to deal with the consequences.

Lots and lots of excercise helps but he still had 'maddies' :clown:  Fortunately, Lilly takes him in hand and 'sorts him out'. I find that time out when he is getting too wild helps a lot.

If nothing else, our coffee table has very little on it and the lounge is immaculate :) (apart from puppy toys strewn across the floor)

He arrived 10 weeks ago having been kennelled for a few months while his breeders searched for a 'forever home' at which point he was 32 weeks. He has calmed down a lot but is still a menace  and very time consuming. I too, cannot wait for the day that he 'grows up'. I have the feeling that it will be nearer Xmas before that happens

He is great fun and very sweet natured but I think that I will stick to rehoming older whippets in the future :)

I wish I could say my house was spotless! My 5 yo son has autism - and he just trashes the house one room at a time which leaves tons of fun objects for the pups to chew and fight over - Tellytubbies, Iggle Piggle, Upsy Daisy are constantly being washed... Don't let anyone ever tell you that people with autism like order - Luca loves chaos! Think I'm gonna hire a skip and just start chucking stuff out!

Finn was calmer at 12 mths than at 6mths, but he's only really beginning to calm down now ... and he was 2 on Thursday. Tyg, at 11 mths, is a black and white whirlwind. Neither of them has ever been destructive just very high octane.

It will get better :)

OH, then there is hope for a before Xmas / 18 month improvement! :luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Ash has calmed down alot, he still gets very excited when people arrive (Because he thinks everyone is his best friend!) but he quickly calms down.

I'm sure your whippet will grow out of it :p

My son is being tested for Asperger's and PDA (another syndrome on the spectrum) and his room is usually an absolute tip. He leaves his plates/ cups/ crisp packets everywhere and whenever he leaves the front room I have to jump up and move the remote controlos otherwise I'll find them in the garden with the rest of the things the dogs steal....!

My two are quite the little buggers at 9 and a half months old. Roscoe would be fine on his own generally, I think, but I'm sure he would be more dominant with other dogs if he was an only dog and I wouldn't want that. He's much more laid back and will quite happily lie in the grass watching the world go by. Grover, on the other hand, is mental. He can't stay still, hates it when I go upstairs and leave him downstairs, and always has to be into something. Oddly, thought, it is Roscoe, the calm fella, who is a fantastic guard dog. He's much more sure of himself whereas Grover can get quite nervous in new situations. Both dogs are gradually learning 'down' when people visit but still scratched my back when I came in this evening - I was turning to ignore the excited jumping, telling them 'down' when one jumped up and scratched by accident. We have to keep them on leads near kids younger than about 10 because they do jump up at faces (for a kiss, but try telling screaming child/ anxious parent that!). Ours are good at recall unless they are having a scrap in which case they just want to flatten one another. They are very good at 'drop' and 'leave' and always sit for food etc. I will say their scraps have got quite nasty a few times and we do have to feed them separately now, but I guess that's the price of having two very evenly matched males (age, height etc) as Grover vies for topdog spot. I'm sure they'll settle eventually and was quite prepared that this is the price you pay for having pups. Be nice when they are a bit calmer!

Several people have pointed out that Roscoe is exactly like my older son (14), calm and steady, whilst Grover is like my youngest son(12) who is a loveable rogue with suspected Asperger's!!

THe differences in their personalities is quite amazing...Marlo is lazy and fairly aloof - not bothered by being on his own, although he goes a bit mental when I drop my son off in the mornings (he walks the last bit alone and Marlo acts like he's being abandoned!) He's stockier than Huey and until recently was quite a bit bigger - but is by far the wuss of the two. I stepped on his paw the other day and he cried for a good five minutes, whereas I regularly stand on Huey's paws (a combination of me being one of the clumsiest people in the world and Huey being constantly under my feet!) Huey I think is like a cat - he always wants to be on your knee and likes to weave around your legs (hence the standing on his feet). When they chase eachother it's almost like Huey has another gear to go to whereas Marlo always seems to be running flat out. I think it's cause he's longer and thinner than Marlo - although he's only a pound or so lighter which is amazing considering Marlo has always scoffed his food while Huey picks! Huey loves being around us and follows me all day, Marlo on the other hand prefers chilling on his own. As for top dog - I think Marlo would be - but he can't be bothered and Huey is just a little workie ticket (as we say in these parts)...in fact if there's any trouble in the dog park Huey always rushes over to try and taunt some aggressive dog into chasing him! I was prepared for the work of A puppy - but two is a lot more work than one. I used to have two cats (sisters) and it wasn't quite twice the work, but I think two pups is more than twice the work - mainly because while you are dealing with/ training one the other knows he can get away with murder! They are calming down a bit - a couple of moths ago I could have quite happily committed whippeticide!

Phew, so at least he might calm down abit eventually!! :)

To be fair his latest mess was my fault. After my nightshift I took them out then fell asleep leaving the puppies to their own devices. Woke up to a living room full of confetti and a very smug looking whippet and chihuahua!! Was about to be annoyed when I realised the post they had chewed up was a circular and some conservative party propaganda... Good puppies!!he he...

As long as I can find him someone speedy to play with onhis walk he is usually alot better. This means scanning the horizon for Biscuit the Weimaraner, or Rosie or Kym the lurchers. Well, TBH he'll throw himself at pretty much any slightly friendly dog..
