My two 9 month old rescue whippets have been with us now for 5 / 6 weeks. They have been clean indoors except once Jake wee'd up our antique sideboard and Izzy left us a couple of small puddles, so all in all not bad, We generally leave the back door open and they go in the garden if they need to.

Now it is starting to rain they are reluctant to go into the garden and have both wee'd indoors in the past couple of days. They get taken out 4 times a day so should be ok in between. Both times we didnt see them so hard to let them know its bad to wee indoors.

Anyone else tackled this problem.

hi - have experienced this always in rainy weather with our lurcher and greyhound. if its raining really hard they have run out, run in and had a wee indoors. if the rain lets off we just keep sending them out with encouraging words like "be brave - you won't melt in the rain..." and they usually do the biz.

guess its different with puppies as they cant hold it as long. maybe could could accompany them with a big brolly? :)

My one thought is not to leave the back door open. They are still quite young, and having been rehomed, they probably need toilet training to be reinforced again. Keep taking them into the garden on a regular basis (but don't let them wander out of their own free will), watch them and when they go, praise them effusively. Don't leave them unattended to goto the loo....otherwise you won't know if they've been or not.

It's good that they get taken out 4 times a day. Praise them when they go outside and stick to a routine of walks at the same time each day once their toilet training has improved again.

Smirnoff is doing the same, when I take her out for her last pee at night, its almost too cold to pee !!

try maybe taking them out a bit more reguarly during the day, and maybe try training pee pads, might help

Agree with Nicola here

far better to go outdside with them every few hours then you will see exactly what they have done and where...

they will soon learn the difference between inside and outside...

We have tended to just leave it to chance and they have gone outside on their own. Looks like I need to actually take them out regularly and stay with them, as per Nicola's suggestion.

We had a greyhound who hated rain and it would seem that our whippet is none the different.

Sidney hates getting wet and if it is raining, eh would rather do his doodles and tinkles on the drive way than in the garden

Our Meg hates the rain too - she runs outside runs around in a circle ~(the fastest you'll every see) - does what she needs and runs straight back in again - She could set a land speed record !!!!!!!!!! She knows what she has to do to get back in and she does it double time!!

when Tilly was a pup we would take her out every 30 mins to start, then every hour, lots of encouraging words

Loads of prase when they do it.

Tilly hates the rain, but i wont let her in till she goes and keep saying 'go wee's' till she does it

I have had Rupert for 3 years he is 4 now and he would still do it in the house if it was raining and i didnt watch him, he has a dog flap but hates going out in the rain! i have to drag him outside and stand there getting soaked waiting for him to do his business and i refuse to go in until he has been, some days i can be standing in the rain for 20 - 30 minutes. He is starting to learn and we will get there eventually!

I do regular wee walks round the garden with a brolly if its raining

Soft arse arent I!!!!! :- "

Similar story for us I'm afraid...if it's wet we either put on Pearl's coat or head our with the big brolly held over her (means that we get wet, but she will wee outside!) She's learned very quickly to do her business fast, :- " as she doesn't get in again until she has! Can't say I blame her really!

It's really really useful to teach your dogs a 'wee' command.........my pair are happy to go out in the rain, but if I really need to know they're empty (like before a long car journey) it helps to be able to let them know what's required.

I started by really stressing the word when they were actually having a wee 'good WEE, what a good WEE, that's a WEE that is' (got some funny looks in the park for that lol)

Now i only have to say 'have a wee' and they find a good spot pretty much straight away.

Would be handy in the rain I reckon - go out with them (with a brolly) and tell them to have a wee, then let them back in the minute they've done it.

I must admit, while I'm house training a dog or puppy, I go outside with them until they are absolutely reliable, so that while they're doing the required action I can praise them while they're doing it (ie "be clean!" for a wee). and if it's raining, I put my coat on and go out with them.

It might sound mad, but it does seem to speed things up somewhat. Good luck :luck:

(But I love "doodles and tinkles" as mentioned somewhere above :D :D )

Jinny arrived at the beginning of June this year as a 9 week old pup and I had to get her housetrained during that awful rain all through the summer (w00t)

It was every half hour and also as soon as she woke up or finished eating, I just carried her outside and put her in the same place every time, under a huge beech tree in the paddock for shelter, and just repeated "go wee wee, go wee wee" over and over until it happened. She then got the ecstatic "good girl, good girl, there's a good girl" and was allowed straight back in again.

Result ...... she was clean by the time she was 12ish weeks old and just went and stood by the back door when she needed to go out  Of course, it meant that I had to be aware that she was standing at the door so I pretty much didn't let her leave my sight until she was around 4+ months old

The funniest thing is my neighbour's bedroom sort of overlooks where Jinny goes for her late night pee at the front of the house, and she has told me how she giggles to herself when she hears me standing outside at midnight chanting 'go wee wee, go wee wee' ...... 'now go poo, now go poo' followed by 'WHAT A GOOD GIRL' !!

In fact, I'm just off to do the nightly ritual now!!!!! :teehee:

lol I'm glad I'm not the only insane person who calls a wee a wee and a poo a poo!.....people who come across me giving toilet commands really must think I'm nuts lol
